Abstract

Described herein are embodiments of stationary exercise machines having reciprocating foot and/or hand members, such as foot pedals that move in a closed loop path. Some embodiments can include reciprocating foot pedals that cause a user's feet to move along a closed loop path that is substantially inclined, such that the foot motion simulates a climbing motion more than a flat walking or running motion. Some embodiments can further include reciprocating handles that are configured to move in coordination with the foot via a linkage to a crank wheel also coupled to the foot pedals. Variable resistance can be provided via a rotating air-resistance based mechanism, via a magnetism based mechanism, and/or via other mechanisms, one or more of which can be rapidly adjustable while the user is using the machine.

Claims (52)

1. A stationary exercise machine comprising:

a stationary frame;

a crankshaft mounted to the stationary frame to rotate about a crankshaft axis;

first and second handles operatively associated with first and second virtual crank arms, respectively, to convert a user's input force at the first and second handles into a first moment on the crankshaft;

first and second crank arms fixedly connected to the crankshaft and rotatable about the crankshaft axis, the first and second crank arms pivotally connected to first and second lower reciprocating members, respectively, at a respective pivot axis;

each of the pivot axes orbit the crankshaft axis; and

an angle between the first and second crank arms and corresponding first and second virtual crank arms is between approximately 60 and 90 degrees.

2. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , further comprising:

first and second pedals coupled to the first and second lower reciprocating members, respectively, at a location distal from the pivot axis of its respective lower reciprocating member.

3. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the first virtual crank arm and the first crank arm are situated at about 75 degrees relative to one another; and

the second virtual crank arm and the second crank arm are situated at about 75 degrees relative to one another.

4. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the first virtual crank arm and the first crank arm have a length ratio relative to one another of between 1:1 and 1:4; and

the second virtual crank arm and the second crank arm have a length ratio relative to one another of between 1:1 and 1:4.

5. The stationary exercise machine of claim 4 , wherein:

the length ratio of the first virtual crank arm and the first crank arm is between 1:2 and 1:3; and

the length ratio of the second virtual crank arm and the second crank arm is between 1:2 and 1:3.

6. The stationary exercise machine of claim 5 , wherein:

the length ratio of the first virtual crank arm and the first crank arm is about 1:2.8; and

the length ratio of the second virtual crank arm and the second crank arm is about 1:2.8.

7. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , further comprising:

first and second upper reciprocating members operatively associated with the first and second handles and the first and second virtual crank arms, respectively.

8. The stationary exercise machine of claim 7 , wherein:

the first upper reciprocating member is operatively coupled to a first disk via a first collar that encompasses the first disk; and

the second upper reciprocating member is operatively coupled to a second disk via a second collar that encompasses the second disk.

9. The stationary exercise machine of claim 8 , wherein:

the first disk is rotatably mounted within the first collar and rotates within the first collar as the crankshaft rotates; and

the second disk is rotatably mounted within the second collar and rotates within the second collar as the crankshaft rotates.

10. The stationary exercise machine of claim 9 , wherein:

a center of the first disk is offset from the crankshaft axis; and

a center of the second disk is offset from the crankshaft axis.

11. The stationary exercise machine of claim 8 , wherein:

first and second links pivotally connected to the first and second upper reciprocating members, respectively, and the first and second links are fixedly connected to the first and second handles, respectively.

13. The stationary exercise machine of claim 7 , further comprising:

first and second rollers joined to the first and second lower reciprocating members, respectively, and the first and second rollers travel between a predetermined upper point and a predetermined lower point on first and second incline members, respectively.

14. The stationary exercise machine of claim 13 , wherein:

an angle between each of the first and second upper reciprocating members and the first and second virtual crank arms, respectively, is between 65 degrees and 115 degrees when the first and second rollers are at about the midpoint of their travel between their respective predetermined upper and lower points.

15. The stationary exercise machine of claim 13 , wherein:

an angle between each of the first and second lower crank arms and the first and second lower reciprocating members, respectively, is between 80 degrees and 100 degrees when the respective first and second rollers are at about the midpoint of their travel between their respective predetermined upper and lower points.

16. The stationary exercise machine of claim 13 , further comprising:

first and second pedals coupled to the first and second lower reciprocating members, respectively, at a location distal from the pivot axis of its respective lower reciprocating member, and

the first and second handles, the first and second virtual crank arms, the first and second crank arms, the first and second lower reciprocating members, and the first and second pedals are configured to provide a mechanical advantage ratio of between about 0.8 and 1.1 at the crankshaft for user input forces applied to the handles and the pedals when the first and second rollers are at about the midpoint of their travel between their respective predetermined upper and lower points.

17. The stationary exercise machine of claim 2 , wherein:
