Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion with a toe portion, a heel portion, a rear portion, a front portion with a strike face, a sole portion, and a top portion with a plurality of ports. The body portion may define a periphery of the golf club head. The golf club head may also include a plurality of weight portions with each weight portion disposed in one port of the plurality of ports. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (50)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a rear portion, a front portion with a strike face, a sole portion, a top portion, and a plurality of ports, the body portion defining a periphery of the golf club head; and

a visual guide portion having a first guide portion formed by a first set of ports having at least three ports of the plurality of ports located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the toe portion and defining a first line extending between the rear portion and the front portion, a second guide portion formed by a second set of ports having at least three ports of the plurality of ports located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the heel portion and defining a second line extending between the rear portion and the front portion and being substantially parallel with the first line, and a third guide portion extending on the top portion along a line between the front portion and the rear portion, the third guide portion formed by a third set of ports having at least three ports of the plurality of ports being substantially equidistant from the first guide portion and the second guide portion,

wherein the first set of ports is located at a first portion of the top portion and the second set of ports is located at a second portion of the top portion, wherein the first and second portions each include a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge,

wherein the first edge is at or proximate the periphery, the second edge is distal to the periphery, and the first and second edges are connected via the third and fourth edges,

wherein the first edge and the second edge have different lengths and are located at different heights on the body portion,

wherein the first, second, third, and fourth edges are arranged such that the first and second portions each have a trapezoid-like appearance when the body portion is viewed from above,

wherein each port of the first set of ports, the second set of ports and the third set of ports includes a port opening on the top portion, a port bottom wall between the top portion and the sole portion, and a port side wall extending from the port opening to the port bottom wall,

wherein each port of the plurality of ports is associated with a port diameter, and

wherein any two adjacent ports of the first set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the first set of ports, any two adjacent ports of the second set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the second set of ports, and any two adjacent ports of the third set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the third set of ports; and

a plurality of weight portions with each weight portion configured to be received in each port of the plurality of ports,

wherein at least one weight portion of the plurality of weight portions is located (i) between the toe portion and the rear portion on a peripheral side face positioned between a surface of the top portion and a surface of the sole portion or (ii) between the heel portion and the rear portion on a peripheral side face positioned between a surface of the top portion and a surface of the sole portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the rear portion includes a back wall portion, and wherein the back wall portion comprises at least one port of the plurality of ports having a port opening on the back wall portion, a port bottom wall between the back wall portion and the front portion, and a port side wall extending from the port opening to the port bottom wall.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , the body portion having a hosel bore on the top portion, the hosel bore having a different diameter than the ports of the first, second and third guide portions.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the rear portion includes a back wall portion, and wherein the back wall portion comprises at least one port of the plurality of ports.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first and second guide portions are separated by a distance greater than 1.68 inches (42.67 mm) and less than or equal to 4.25 inches (107.95 mm).

6. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first guide portion, the second guide portion and the third guide portion are substantially parallel.

7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the visual guide portion comprises at least one of a colored line portion, a raised line portion, a recessed line portion, a laser-etched line portion, a solid line portion, a dashed line portion, a dotted line portion, or two or more ports of the plurality of ports.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a rear portion, a front portion with a strike face, a sole portion, a top portion, and a plurality of ports, the body portion defining a periphery of the golf club head; and

a visual guide portion having a first guide portion formed by a first set of ports having at least three ports of the plurality of ports located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the toe portion and defining a first line extending between the rear portion and the front portion, a second guide portion formed by a second set of ports having at least three ports of the plurality of ports located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the heel portion and defining a second line extending between the rear portion and the front portion and being substantially parallel with the first line, and a third guide portion extending on the top portion along a line between the front portion and the rear portion and being substantially equidistant from the first guide portion and the second guide portion, the third guide portion formed by a third set of ports having a greater number of ports than the first set of ports and the second set of ports;

wherein the first set of ports is located at a first portion of the top portion and the second set of ports is located at a second portion of the top portion, wherein the first and second portions each include a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge,

wherein the first edge is at or proximate the periphery, the second edge is distal to the periphery, and the first and second edges are connected via the third and fourth edges,

wherein the first edge and the second edge have different lengths and are located at different heights on the body portion,

wherein the first, second, third, and fourth edges are arranged such that the first and second portions each have a trapezoid-like appearance when the body portion is viewed from above,

wherein each port of the plurality of ports is associated with a port diameter,

wherein any two adjacent ports of the first set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the first set of ports, any two adjacent ports of the second set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the second set of ports, and any two adjacent ports of the third set of ports are separated by a distance less than or equal to the port diameter of any of the two adjacent ports of the third set of ports, and

wherein at least two ports of the plurality of ports are located (i) between the top portion and the sole portion and follow a side contour of the periphery at or proximate the toe portion and extending toward the rear portion or (ii) between the top portion and the sole portion and follow a side contour of the periphery at or proximate the heel portion and extending toward the rear portion.

9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein at least one port of the plurality of ports is located between the toe portion and the rear portion and extending longitudinally in a direction from the toe portion to the heel portion.

10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein at least one port of the plurality of ports is located between the heel portion and the rear portion and extending longitudinally in a direction from the heel portion to the toe portion.

11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , the body portion having a hosel bore on the top portion, the hosel bore having a different diameter than the ports of the first, second, and third guide portions.

12. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the rear portion includes a back wall portion, and wherein the back wall portion comprises at least one port of the plurality of ports.

13. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of weight portions with each weight portion configured to be received in each port of the plurality of ports.

14. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first and second guide portions are separated by a distance greater than 1.68 inches (42.67 mm) and less than or equal to 4.25 inches (107.95 mm).

15. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first guide portion, the second guide portion and the third guide portion are substantially parallel.

16. A golf club head comprising:

a plurality of weight portions;

a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a rear portion, a front portion with a strike face, a sole portion, and a top portion, the body portion defining a periphery of the golf club head;

a visual guide portion having a first guide portion formed by a first set of weight portions of the plurality of weight portions, the first set of weight portions having at least three weight portions located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the toe portion and defining a first line extending between the rear portion and the front portion, a second guide portion formed by a second set of weight portions of the plurality of weight portions, the second set of weight portions having at least three weight portions located less than 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) from the periphery at or proximate to the heel portion and defining a second line extending between the rear portion and the front portion and being substantially parallel with the first line,

wherein the first set of weight portions is located at a first portion of the top portion and the second set of weight portions are located at a second portion of the top portion, wherein the first and second portions each include a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge,

wherein the first edge is at or proximate the periphery, the second edge is distal to the periphery, and the first and second edges are connected via the third and fourth edges,

wherein the first edge is shorter in length than the second edge and is located at a lower height on the body portion than the second edge,

wherein the third and fourth edges extend downward from the second edge to the first edge,

wherein the first, second, third, and fourth edges are arranged such that the first and second portions each have a trapezoid-like appearance when the body portion is viewed from above,

wherein at least one weight portion of the plurality of weight portions longitudinally extends transverse relative to any of the weight portions of the first set of weight portions and the second set of weight portions and is located (i) between the toe portion and the rear portion on a peripheral side face positioned between a surface of the top portion and a surface of the sole portion or (ii) between the heel portion and the rear portion on a peripheral side face positioned between a surface of the top portion and a surface of the sole portion, and

wherein the at least one weight portion of the plurality of weight portions is not visible via directly viewing the golf club head from the top portion.

17. A golf club head as defined in claim 16 , further comprising a third guide portion extending on the top portion along a line between the front portion and the rear portion and being substantially equidistant from the first guide portion and the second guide portion, the third guide portion formed by third set of weight portions having a greater number of weight portions of the plurality of weight portions than the first set of weight portions and the second set of weight portions.

18. A golf club head as defined in claim 16 , wherein the first and second guide portions are separated by a distance greater than 1.68 inches (42.67 mm) and less than or equal to 4.25 inches (107.95 mm).

A golf club head as defined in claim 16 , further comprising a third guide portion extending on the top portion along a line between the front portion and the rear portion and being substantially equidistant from the first guide portion and the second guide portion, the third guide portion formed by third set of weight portions having a greater number of weight portions of the plurality of weight portions than the first set of weight portions and the second set of weight portions, and wherein the-first guide portion, the second guide portion and the third guide portion are substantially parallel.

20. A golf club head as defined in claim 16 , wherein at least one of the weight portions of the plurality of weight portions comprises tungsten.
