Abstract

The present invention relates to a positioning means for a fiber optic connector assembly, a fiber optic connector assembly and a fiber termination unit comprising the positioning means through which manufacturing tolerances can be absorbed to provide an improved optical interconnection with a high signal transmission rate. The positioning means comprises a receiving means for receiving one of a jack assembly or plug assembly and a stationary support supporting said receiving means, wherein the receiving means is displaceable to a certain extent relative to the stationary support at least along one direction other than a connection direction for optically interconnecting the optical fibers allowing an alignment of the receivable jack or plug assembly along the direction transversal to the connection direction. A spring loaded element resiliently urges said receiving means away from the support in one embodiment.

Claims (27)

1. A telecommunications connection system comprising:

a base;

a stationary support fixedly mounted to the base, the stationary support including a first key and slot structure;

a displaceable member supported by the stationary support, the displaceable member including a plug holder and a second key and slot structure, the plug holder adapted to hold a plug assembly of an optical fiber cable;

a predetermined gap between opposing surfaces of the first and the second key and slot structures; and

a spring loaded element arranged between the stationary support and the displaceable member;

wherein the predetermined gap allows a displacement of the displaceable member to accommodate tolerances of the telecommunications connection system in at least a first direction and an opposite second direction.

2. The telecommunications connection system of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second key and slot structures extend parallel to a connection direction of the plug assembly.

3. The telecommunications connection system of claim 1 , wherein the spring loaded element resiliently urges the displaceable member away from the stationary support.

4. The telecommunications connection system of claim 1 , wherein the first direction and the opposite second direction run transversely to a connection direction of the plug assembly.

5. The telecommunications connection system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second key and slot structures are operably engaged together along a connection direction of the plug assembly.

6. The telecommunications connection system of claim 1 , wherein the spring loaded element being aligned to apply a compressive force in a connection direction of the plug assembly against the displaceable member.

7. A telecommunications connection system comprising:

a base;

a stationary support fixedly mounted to the base, the stationary support including a first key and slot structure;

a displaceable member supported by the stationary support, the displaceable member including a plug holder and a second key and slot structure, the plug holder adapted to hold a plug assembly of an optical fiber cable;

a predetermined gap between opposing surfaces of the first and the second key and slot structures;

a spring loaded element arranged between the stationary support and the displaceable member, wherein the predetermined gap allows a displacement of the displaceable member to accommodate tolerances of the telecommunications connection system; and

a fiber termination unit between a provider side and a customer side of a broadband network, wherein the optical fiber cable is on the provider side, and wherein the base is included on the fiber termination unit.

8. The telecommunications connection system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a second base including a jack receiver, the jack receiver adapted to hold a jack assembly;

wherein the base is a first base;

wherein when the first base and the second base are pushed together the spring loaded element provides a spring load.

9. The telecommunications connection system of claim 8 , wherein the spring load of the spring loaded element when the first base and the second base are pushed together is higher than a latching force for effecting a latching connection between the plug assembly of the optical fiber cable and the jack assembly.

10. The telecommunications connection system of claim 8 , wherein the second base is connected to an optical fiber loop of a dwelling unit.

11. The telecommunications connection system of claim 8 , wherein the second base is connected to an electrical loop of a dwelling unit.

12. The telecommunications connection system of claim 8 , further comprising at least one releasable latch, at least one protrusion, and at least one recess, wherein the first base and the second base are securable to each other by engaging the at least one protrusion of one of the bases with the at least one recess of another of the bases and further by engaging the at least one releasable latch.
