Abstract

A system and method for allowing any surgeon, including those surgeons who perform a fewer number of a replacement procedure as compared to a more experienced surgeon who performs a greater number of procedures, to provide an improved likelihood of a favorable outcome approaching, if not exceeding, a likelihood of a favorable outcome as performed by a very experienced surgeon with the replacement procedure, including installation and orientation of a prosthesis into tissue of a patient as well as construction of a prosthetic assembly to be installed into such tissue.

Claims (31)

1. A method for constructing a prosthetic assembly to be installed in a live bone, the prosthetic assembly including a first component installed into the live bone and a second component to be joined to the first component using a mechanical interface, comprising:

(a) generating an original series of pulses from an oscillation engine;

(b) communicating said original series of pulses to the second component producing a communicated series of pulses at the second component;

(c) vibrating, responsive to said communicated series of pulses, the second component to produce a vibrating second component having a predetermined vibration pattern; and

(d) joining the vibrating second component to the first component while the first component is installed in the live bone.

2. A method for constructing a prosthetic assembly to be installed in a live bone, the prosthetic assembly including a first component and a second component to be joined to the first component using a mechanical interface, comprising:

(a) generating a first original series of pulses from a first oscillation engine;

(b) communicating said first original series of pulses to the second component producing a first communicated series of pulses at the second component;

(c) vibrating, responsive to said first communicated series of pulses, the second component to produce a vibrating second component having a first predetermined vibration pattern; and

(d) joining the vibrating second component to the first component while the first component is secured.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

(e) communicating said first original series of pulses to the first component producing a second communicated series of pulses at the first component;

(f) vibrating, responsive to said second communicated series of pulses, the first component to produce a vibrating first component having a second predetermined vibration pattern.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

(e) generating a second original series of pulses from a second oscillation engine;

(f) communicating said second original series of pulses to the first component producing a second communicated series of pulses at the first component;

(g) vibrating, responsive to said second communicated series of pulses, the first component to produce a vibrating first component having a second predetermined vibration pattern; and

(h) joining the vibrating first component to the vibrating second component.

5. A construction device for a prosthetic assembly to be installed in a live bone, the prosthetic assembly including a first component installed into the live bone and a second component to be joined to the first component using a mechanical interface, comprising:

a controller including a trigger;

a support having a proximal end and a distal end opposite of said proximal end, said support further having a longitudinal axis extending from said proximal end to said distal end with said proximal end coupled to said controller, said support further having an adapter coupled to said distal end with said adapter configured to secure the second component; and

an oscillator coupled to said controller and to said support, said oscillator configured to control a series of vibratory pulses having an oscillation frequency and an oscillation magnitude of said support with said oscillation frequency and said oscillation magnitude configured to construct the second component together with the first component responsive to said series of vibratory pulses;

wherein said series of vibratory pulses includes a vibratory motion having a frequency greater than or equal to about 20 kHz.

6. A construction device for a prosthetic assembly to be installed in a live bone, the prosthetic assembly including a first component and a second component to be joined to the first component using a mechanical interface, comprising:

a controller including a trigger;

a support having a proximal end and a distal end opposite of said proximal end, said support further having a longitudinal axis extending from said proximal end to said distal end with said proximal end coupled to said controller, said support further having a first adapter coupled to said distal end with said first adapter configured to secure the first component;

a second adaptor coupled to said support with said second adaptor configured to secure the second component; and

a first oscillator coupled to said controller and to said first adaptor, said first oscillator configured to control a first series of vibratory pulses having a first oscillation frequency and a first oscillation magnitude of said first adaptor with said first oscillation frequency and said first oscillation magnitude configured to construct the second component together with the first component responsive to said first series of vibratory pulses.

7. The construction device of claim 6 wherein said first oscillator is coupled to said second adaptor and wherein said first oscillator is configured to vibrate said second adaptor.

8. The construction device of claim 6 further comprising:

a second oscillator coupled to said controller and to said second adaptor, said second oscillator configured to control a second series of vibratory pulses having a second oscillation frequency and a second oscillation magnitude of said second adaptor with said second oscillation frequency and said second oscillation magnitude configured to construct the second component together with the first component responsive to said first and second series of vibratory pulses.
