Abstract

Provided are polymer-aerogel composite coatings, devices and articles including polymer-aerogel composite coatings, and methods for preparing the polymer-aerogel composite. The exemplary article can include a surface, wherein the surface includes at least one region and a polymer-aerogel composite coating disposed over the at least one region, wherein the polymer-aerogel composite coating has a water contact angle of at least about 140° and a contact angle hysteresis of less than about 1°. The polymer-aerogel composite coating can include a polymer and an ultra high water content catalyzed polysilicate aerogel, the polysilicate aerogel including a three dimensional network of silica particles having surface functional groups derivatized with a silylating agent and a plurality of pores.

Claims (29)

1. An article comprising:

a substrate comprising at least one region; and

a composite coating disposed over the at least one region, wherein the composite coating comprises one or more polymers and a three dimensional network of silica particles having surface functional groups derivatized with a silylating agent, the silylating agent comprising at least one compound chosen from trimethylchlorosilane, trichloromethylsilane, and trichlorooctylsilane, the silica particles consisting of polysilicate;

wherein the composite coating has a water contact angle of at least about 140°.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the composite coating comprises a polymer-aerogel composite.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein a surface of the composite coating is sufficiently rough to allow retention of a water contact angle of 150° or more.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises at least one material chosen from poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, poly(butyl methacrylate), poly(tert-butyl methacrylate), poly(methyl acrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), poly(tert-butyl acrylate), poly(perfluorooctyl methacrylate), and any suitable vinyl polymer.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the surface comprises at least one material chosen from a metal, a silicon wafer, a glass, a ceramic, a plastic, and a fabric.

6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is present in the composite coating in an amount from about 5% by volume to about 50% by volume.

7. The article of claim 1 , wherein composite coating resists corrosion for about 1800 hours or longer.

8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the composite coating is chosen from a self-cleaning surface, an anti-reflective coating, an anti-icing coating, a defogging coating, an anti-microbial coating, a stain resistant coating, and a drag reduction coating in water environment.

9. The article of claim 1 , wherein the composite coating has a water contact angle greater than a water contact angle of a coating comprising the one or more polymers alone.

10. The article of claim 1 , wherein a surface of said composite coating is uneven and said surface has a water contact angle of at least about 150°.

11. The article of claim 1 , wherein a surface of the composite coating has a water contact angle of at least 140°.

12. An article comprising:

a surface, wherein the surface comprises at least one region; and

a polymer-aerogel composite coating disposed over the at least one region, wherein the polymer-aerogel composite coating comprises one or more polymers and an ultra high water content catalyzed polysilicate aerogel, the polysilicate aerogel comprising a three dimensional network of silica particles having surface functional groups derivatized with a silylating agent and a plurality of pores,

wherein the polymer-aerogel composite coating has a water contact angle of at least 140°.

13. The article of claim 12 wherein the silylating agent comprises one or more of trimethylchlorosilane, trichloromethylsilane, trichlorooctylsilane, hexamethyldisilazane, and any reactive silane including at least one hydrophobic ligand.

14. The article of claim 12 , wherein the polymer comprises one or more of poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, poly(butyl methacrylate), poly(tert-butyl methacrylate), poly(methyl acrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), poly(tert-butyl acrylate), poly(perfluorooctyl methacrylate), and any suitable vinyl polymer.

15. The article of claim 12 , wherein the surface comprises at least one of a metal, a silicon wafer, a glass, a ceramic, a plastic, and a fabric.

16. The article of claim 12 , wherein the polymer is present in the polymer-aerogel composite coating in an amount from about 5% by volume to about 50% by volume.

17. The article of claim 12 , wherein the polymer-aerogel composite coating resists corrosion for about 1800 hours or longer.

18. The article of claim 12 , wherein the polymer-aerogel composite coating is used for at least one of self-cleaning surface, anti-reflective coating, anti-icing coating, a defogging coating, an anti-microbial coating, a stain resistant coating, and a drag reduction coating in water environment.

19. The article of claim 12 , wherein the article is selected from the group consisting of an antenna, a window, an automobile, an aircraft, a building, a textile, a boat, a partially submerged structure in water and a fully submerged structure in water.

20. An article comprising:

a substrate comprising at least one region; and

a composite coating disposed over the at least one region, wherein the composite coating comprises one or more polymers and a three dimensional network of silica particles having surface functional groups derivatized with a silylating agent, the silylating agent comprising at least one compound chosen from trimethylchlorosilane, trichloromethylsilane, and trichlorooctylsilane, the three dimensional network of silica particles being made by combining ingredients consisting of a solvent, at least one alkoxy silane precursor, water, and an acid, prior to being derivatized with the silylating agent;
