Abstract

Systems, methods, devices, and apparatus for detecting sample defects in blood samples processed in automated processing systems are described herein. One aspect describes an automated blood sample processing apparatus having a pre-analytic specimen integrity monitoring device. Another aspect describes devices, systems, and methods for identifying blood components and properties in blood samples. Further aspects relate to systems and methods for setting reference ranges for sample defects and interference in blood samples. Additionally, devices, systems, and methods for identifying defective samples are described.

Claims (37)

1. An automated blood sample processing apparatus having a pre-analytic specimen integrity monitoring device, the apparatus comprising:

an automated system control controlling one or more routing parameters according to a sample type associated with a sample;

a main track;

the pre-analytic specimen integrity monitoring device on a specimen integrity monitor lane off of the main track;

an error lane off of the main track;

one or more processors; and

one or more computer memory devices having computer executable instructions embodied thereon, the one or more processors programmed to perform a method comprising:

based on the one or more routing parameters associated with the sample, guiding the sample from the main track to the specimen integrity monitor lane for analysis of the sample by the pre-analytic specimen integrity monitoring device;

determining the sample type for the sample;

in the pre-analytic specimen integrity monitoring device:

gripping and removing the sample from a sample holder by a sample extraction device;

capturing a plurality of images of the sample via one or more sensors;

determining a plurality of color elements from the plurality of images, wherein each color element in the plurality of color elements comprises an associated RGB color value;

mapping the plurality of color elements in a linear array using the associated RGB color value of each color element in the plurality of color elements;

analyzing the linear array from a first end of the linear array to determine a first color element in the plurality of color elements that falls within a valid brightness range associated with liquid components of the sample;

analyzing the linear array from a second end of the linear array to determine a second color element in the plurality of color elements that falls within the valid brightness range associated with the liquid components of the sample;

removing one or more color elements in the plurality of color elements that fall outside of the valid brightness range to create a clean array;

determining a distance between each color element in the clean array and creating a distance array;

determining a plurality of color arrays based on the distance array, wherein each color array is associated with a liquid blood component of the sample;

determining a color value for each color array in the plurality of color arrays;

retrieving a reference range for one or more defects to be analyzed for the sample based on the sample type associated with the sample; and

determining if the color value of at least one of the plurality of color arrays is outside of the reference range for the one or more defects to be analyzed, wherein:

upon determining that the color value falls outside of the reference range, determining a presence of the one or more defects in the sample, returning the sample to the main track, and diverting the sample to the error lane; and

upon determining that the color value falls within the reference range, returning the sample to the main track for further analysis.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include one or more of:

a red color detector;

a blue color detector;

a green color detector;

a black and white camera for capturing barcode information on the sample;

a sample tube width detector; and

a contour alignment detector for measuring a tilt angle of the sample.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , the method further comprising creating a digital record of the linear array, the clean array, the distance array, the plurality of color arrays, and a barcode information associated with the sample; and communicating the digital record of the barcode information to the automated system control for tracking sample information associated with the sample.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more defects include: a hematocrit defect; a hemolysis defect; a clotting defect; an icterus defect; and a lipemia defect.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises a plurality of electronically-actuated routing gates including a first electronically-actuated routing gate for routing the sample from the main track to the specimen integrity monitor lane.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of electronically-actuated routing gates further include a second electronically-actuated routing gate for routing the sample from the specimen integrity monitor lane to the main track.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of electronically-actuated routing gates further include a third electronically-actuated routing gate for routing the sample from the main track to the error lane.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the error lane holds the sample for manual handling by a technologist.
