Abstract

A user-content generated network is provided for presenting business listings, as well as commentary and reviews of businesses, by participants of the network. In an embodiment, businesses can participate in the network and receive referrals from members of the network. The network can track and monitor referrals that individual businesses receive as a mechanism for promoting the business to other users in the network's user base.

Claims (35)

1. A computer system comprising:

a memory that stores (i) information identifying a plurality of participants of a user-content generated network, (ii) link data associated with each of the plurality of participants, the link data corresponding to one or more referral links, the link data linking a referring participant of the plurality of participants and a referred participant of the plurality of participants, and (iii) a collection of rules that specify a selection parameter for the one or more referral links;

one or more processors that communicate with the memory to:

provide a search interface to enable a user to specify, as search criteria, at least a first criterion of information that identifies a type of organization and a second criterion that identifies a person or class of persons of each referring participant of the one or more referral links;

perform a search by:

determining one or more organizations that satisfy at least the first and second criterion;

determining at least a first organization from the one or more organizations which satisfy a least a third criterion of having a referral link from a referring party that has a common geographic characteristic with the user; and

based on the collection of rules, determining, from the link data, one or more referral links of each of the referring participants that are pertinent to the user and to at least the first organization; and

providing a search result that includes an identifier for at least the first organization and the one or more referral links.

2. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that has a common characteristic with the user.

3. The computer system of claim 2 , wherein the common characteristic is geography.

4. The computer system of claim 2 , wherein the common characteristic is membership to a particular organization or business.

5. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is social linked to the user through a social network.

6. The computer system of claim 5 , wherein the social link is direct.

7. The computer system of claim 5 , wherein the social link is no greater than 1 degree of separation.

8. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same demographic as the user.

9. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same community as the user.

10. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same neighborhood as the user.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium that stores instructions, that when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

store (i) information identifying a plurality of participants of a user-content generated network, (ii) link data associated with each of the plurality of participants, the link data corresponding to one or more referral links, the link data linking a referring participant of the plurality of participants and a referred participant of the plurality of participants, and (iii) a collection of rules that specify a selection parameter for the one or more referral links;

providing a search interface to enable a user to specify, as search criteria, at least a first criterion of information that identifies a type of organization and a second criterion that identifies a person or class of persons of each referring participant of the one or more referral links;

performing a search by:

determining one or more organizations that satisfy at least the first and second criterion;

determining at least a first organization from the one or more organizations which satisfy a least a third criterion of having a referral link from a referring party that has a common geographic characteristic with the user; and

based on the collection of rules, determining, from the link data, one or more referral links of each of the referring participants that are pertinent to the user and to at least the first organization; and

providing a search result that includes an identifier for at least the first organization and the one or more referral links.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that has a common characteristic with the user.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the common characteristic is geography.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the common characteristic is membership to a particular organization or business.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is social linked to the user through a social network.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the social link is direct.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the social link is no greater than 1 degree of separation.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same demographic as the user.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same community as the user.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the collection of rules includes a rule specifying one or more participants of the plurality of participants that are pertinent to the user is a participant that is associated with a same neighborhood as the user.
