Abstract

A system and method for affixing barbs on a suture are provided. In one embodiment, the system includes a suture supply mechanism for selectively retaining a length of suture and a barb supply mechanism for operably engaging a barb supply assembly including at least one barb. At least one of the suture supply mechanism and the barb supply mechanism are configured to approximate towards the other of the barb supply mechanism and suture supply mechanism to engage the at least one barb of the barb supply assembly with the suture of the suture supply assembly. Also provided are a barb for use in forming a barbed suture and a suture including at least one barb.

Claims (17)

1. A barbed suture comprising:

an elongate body comprising a monofilament or a multifilament structure; and

a barb including a base portion, a retaining portion, and a barb portion, wherein the retaining portion includes a plurality of leg members extending from a first surface of the base portion penetrating the elongate body to securely affix the barb to the elongate body, and the barb portion extends from a second surface of the base portion, wherein the base portion, the retaining portion, and the barb portion are coplanar when the retaining portion engages the elongate body and each of the plurality of leg members includes at least a first anchor member including one or more barbs, harpoons, or ridges.

2. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the retaining portion includes three leg members.

3. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of leg members includes a plurality of anchor members.

4. The barbed suture of claim 3 , wherein the anchor members of the plurality of anchor members alternate along each of the plurality of leg member.

5. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the barb portion is pointed.

6. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the barb portion is rounded or arcuate.

7. The barbed suture of claim 1 , further including a plurality of barbs.

8. The barbed suture of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of barbs are radially and axially spaced about the elongate body.

9. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the at least first anchor members each include a leading edge and a pair of trailing edges.

10. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the at least first anchor members each include a leading point and a trailing edge extending thereabout.

11. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the at least first anchor members are each disposed on a free end of each of the plurality of leg members.

12. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the barb portion includes multiple points.

13. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of leg members extend towards one another.

14. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of leg members extend away from one another.

15. The barbed suture of claim 1 , wherein the barb portion includes a tapered elongate member.
