Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for administering game play include displaying an electronic reel simulation including a multiple reel array for a wagering game on a display. A user input indicates a selected play option from a plurality of play options. All play options enable all displayed positions of the multiple reel array to be considered in winning outcomes. A game outcome is determined and presented as game symbols on the display. Winning combinations of the game symbols are determined, wherein each winning combination includes three or more matching game symbols appearing in the displayed positions on each of three or more adjacent reels and at least one of the three or more matching game symbols is not used in another winning combination. A payout is determined and multiplied by a multiple correlated to the selected play option when a substitute multiplier symbol appears as one of the game symbols.

Claims (38)

1. A method of operating a gaming machine, the gaming machine including a value input device, a player input device, and an electronic display device, the method comprising:

detecting, via the value input device, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance;

displaying a wagering game on the electronic display device, the wagering game including a symbol array and a plurality of possible symbols, the plurality of possible symbols including a plurality of standard symbols and a plurality of upgradable symbols, the plurality of upgradable symbols having a base state and an upgraded state;

receiving, via the player input device, an input indicative of a wager amount selected from at least three different wager amounts, the selected wager amount being drawn from the credit balance, each wager amount of the at least three different wager amounts enabling the plurality of standard symbols, a respective number of the upgradable symbols in the base state, and a respective number of the upgradable symbols in the upgraded state, wherein the greater the wager amount the greater the respective number of the upgradable symbols in the upgraded state and the lesser the respective number of the upgradable symbols in the base state;

initiating, by a processor, the wagering game in response to the selected wager amount;

populating the symbol array with symbols randomly selected from the symbols enabled by the selected wager amount; and

awarding, by the processor, a payout for any winning combinations of the symbols populating the symbol array, the payout being higher for the winning combinations formed by the upgradable symbols while in the upgraded state than for the same winning combinations formed by the upgradable symbols in the base state, the payout being added to the credit balance.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least three different wager amounts include five different wager amounts.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the winning combinations are determined at least partly along specified paylines that are fixed and common to the at least three different wager amounts.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the winning combinations are determined at least partly by combinations of specified positions in the symbol array, the respective number and location of the specified positions in the combinations being fixed and common to the at least three different wager amounts.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respective number of possible winning combinations is fixed across the at least three different wager amounts.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payout is based on a pay table that is common to the at least three different wager amounts.

7. The method of claim 1 , further including a plurality of simulated reels that only bear the symbols enabled by the selected wager amount, wherein the populating includes rotating and stopping the reels to place a subset of the symbols in visual association with the symbol array.

8. The method of claim 1 , further including displaying an activation box indicating which of the upgradable symbols are in the base state and which of the upgradable symbols are in the upgraded state.

9. A method of operating a gaming machine, the gaming machine including a value input device, a player input device, and an electronic display device, the method comprising:

detecting, via the value input device, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance;

displaying a wagering game on the electronic display device, the wagering game including a symbol array and a plurality of possible symbols, the plurality of possible symbols including a plurality of standard symbols and a plurality of upgradable symbols, the plurality of upgradable symbols having a base state and an upgraded state;

receiving, via the player input device, an input indicative of a wager amount selected from at least three different wager amounts, the selected wager amount being drawn from the credit balance, each wager amount of the at least three different wager amounts enabling the plurality of standard symbols, a respective first subset of the upgradable symbols in the base state, and a respective second subset of the upgradable symbols in the upgraded state, wherein the greater the wager amount the greater the number of the upgradable symbols in the second subset and the lesser the number of the upgradable symbols in the first subset;

initiating, by a processor, the wagering game in response to the selected wager amount;

populating the symbol array with symbols randomly selected from the symbols enabled by the selected wager amount; and

awarding, by the processor, a payout for any winning combinations of the symbols populating the symbol array, the payout being higher for the winning combinations formed by the upgradable symbols while in the upgraded state than for the same winning combinations formed by the upgradable symbols in the base state, the payout being added to the credit balance.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least three different wager amounts include five different wager amounts.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the winning combinations are determined at least partly by combinations of specified positions in the symbol array, the number and location of the specified positions in the combinations being fixed and common to the at least three different wager amounts.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the number of possible winning combinations is fixed across the at least three different wager amounts.

13. A method of operating a gaming machine, the gaming machine including a value input device, a player input device, and an electronic display device, the method comprising:

detecting, via the value input device, a physical item associated with a monetary value that establishes a credit balance;

displaying a wagering game on the electronic display device, the wagering game including a symbol array and a plurality of possible symbols, the plurality of possible symbols including a plurality of standard symbols and a plurality of upgradable symbols, each of the plurality of upgradable symbols having a base state and an upgraded state;

receiving, via the player input device, an input indicative of a wager amount selected from a plurality of predetermined wager amounts ranging from a lower wager amount to a higher wager amount, each wager amount of the plurality corresponding to a different upgradable symbol of the plurality of upgradable symbols, the selected wager amount enabling the plurality of the possible symbols with the corresponding upgradable symbol in the upgraded state and any upgradable symbol corresponding to a lower wager amount in the upgraded state, any upgradable symbol corresponding to a higher wager amount being enabled in the base state;

initiating, by a processor, the wagering game in response to the selected wager amount;

populating the symbol array with symbols randomly selected from the plurality of possible symbols; and

awarding, by the processor, a payout for any winning combinations of the symbols populating the symbol array; the payout being higher for the winning combinations formed by the upgradable symbols in the upgraded state than by the upgradable symbols in the base state, the payout being added to the credit balance.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the upgradable symbols have different award values ranging from a lower award value to a higher award value, and wherein an increasing wager amounts correspond to similarly value-ranked upgradable symbols.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of predetermined wager amounts includes five different wager amounts.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the winning combinations are determined at least partly along specified pay lines that are fixed and common to the plurality of predetermined wager amounts.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the winning combinations are determined at least partly by combinations of specified positions in the symbol array, the number and location of the specified positions in the combinations being fixed and common to the plurality of predetermined wager amounts.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the number of possible winning combinations is fixed across the plurality of predetermined wager amounts.

19. The method of claim 13 , further including a plurality of simulated reels that only bear the symbols enabled by the selected wager amount, wherein the populating includes rotating and stopping the reels to place a subset of the symbols in visual association with the symbol array.

20. The method of claim 13 , further including displaying an activation box indicating which of the upgradable symbols are in the base state and which of the upgradable symbols are in the upgraded state.
