Abstract

Devices and methods for cooling microwave antennas are disclosed herein. The cooling systems can be used with various types of microwave antennas. One variation generally comprises a handle portion with an elongate outer jacket extending from the handle portion. A microwave antenna is positioned within the handle and outer jacket such that cooling fluid pumped into the handle comes into contact directly along a portion of the length, or a majority of the length, or the entire length of the antenna to allow for direct convective cooling. Other variations include cooling sheaths which form defined cooling channels around a portion of the antenna. Yet another variation includes passively-cooled systems which utilize expandable balloons to urge tissue away from the surface of the microwave antenna as well as cooling sheaths which are cooled through endothermic chemical reactions. Furthermore, the microwave antennas themselves can have cooling lumens integrated directly therethrough.

Claims (19)

1. A microwave antenna, comprising:

a jacket;

a feedline disposed in the jacket wherein the jacket and the feedline are dimensioned so as to define a fluid volume therebetween;

a radiating portion formed on a distal portion of the feedline;

a gasket interposed between the feedline and the jacket at a location proximal of a distal end of the jacket and configured to fluidly seal a proximal portion of the fluid volume from a distal portion of the fluid volume;

at least one inflow tubing disposed within the proximal portion of the fluid volume; and

at least one outlet in fluid communication with the proximal portion of the fluid volume.

2. The microwave antenna of claim 1 , wherein the inflow tubing is connected to a source of carbon-dioxide.

3. The microwave antenna of claim 2 , wherein the carbon-dioxide cools via the Joule-Thompson effect.

4. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the fluid volume includes a gas.

5. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the outlet is proximal to a distal end of the inflow tubing.

6. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating portion is electrically connected to the feedline and includes a tip sized to mate with the distal end of the jacket.

7. The microwave antenna according to claim 6 , wherein the tip and the jacket in combination form a needle.

8. The microwave antenna according to claim 6 , wherein the tip is in electrical communication with the radiating portion.

9. The microwave antenna according to claim 6 , wherein the tip is mechanically connected to and electrically isolated from the radiating portion.

10. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , further comprising a handle operatively connected to a proximal end of the jacket.

11. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , further comprising a connector configured to connect to a power generating source.

12. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating portion is a dipole antenna.

13. The microwave antenna according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating portion is a monopole antenna.
