Abstract

A method to provide authentication services to third party vendors by a service provider hosting an authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) server or a similar device that can authenticate users for some other service. This method enables easy and substantially error-free end-user authentication, which forms the basis for enabling electronic transactions (e.g., web-based) that are less vulnerable to fraud.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code;

wherein said at least one memory and said computer program code are configured to, with said at least one processor, cause said apparatus to at least:

receive, at a service provider, identification information associated with a user of a mobile device and an identifier associated with said mobile device, said identification information comprising a user name;

determine, at said service provider, that said identification information is associated with a mobile device and a corresponding registered user of said service provider, said registered user being associated with a randomized key string adapted to enable a vendor to authenticate said user after receiving said randomized key string from said mobile device;

generate and direct said randomized key string toward said mobile device, wherein said randomized key string is generated and directed in response to receiving from said vendor said mobile device identifier and said identification information of said registered user of said service provider; and

communicate said randomized key string to said vendor in response to receiving from said vendor said mobile device identifier and said identification information of said registered user of said service provider, said communicating of said randomized key string being adapted to enable authentication of a user transaction by the vendor based on the randomized key string.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said identification information further comprises an address of said user.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said identifier associated with said mobile device comprises at least one of a cell phone number, a subscriber identity module (SIM) card number, or an electronic serial number (ESN).

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said randomized key string comprises at least one of a character, a number, an image, or a sound.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said at least one memory and said computer program code are configured to, with said at least one processor, cause said apparatus to at least:

verify, at said service provider, that an owner of said mobile device identified by said mobile device identifier is associated with said user name of said identification information.

6. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a service provider, identification information associated with a user of a mobile device and an identifier associated with said mobile device, said identification information comprising a user name;

determining, at said service provider, that said identification information is associated with a mobile device and a corresponding registered user of said service provider, said registered user being associated with a randomized key string adapted to enable a vendor to authenticate said user after receiving said randomized key string from said mobile device;

generating and directing said randomized key string toward said mobile device, wherein said randomized key string is generated and directed in response to receiving from said vendor said mobile device identifier and said identification information of said registered user of said service provider; and

communicating said randomized key string to said vendor in response to receiving from said vendor said mobile device identifier and said identification information of said registered user of said service provider, said communicating of said randomized key string being adapted to enable authentication of a user transaction by the vendor based on the randomized key string.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said identification information further comprises an address of said user.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein said identifier associated with said mobile device comprises at least one of a cell phone number, a subscriber identity module (SIM) card number, or an electronic serial number (ESN).

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein said randomized key string comprises at least one of a character, a number, an image, or a sound.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

verifying, at said service provider, that an owner of said mobile device identified by said mobile device identifier is associated with said user name of said identification information.

11. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code;

wherein said at least one memory and said computer program code are configured to, with said at least one processor, cause said apparatus to at least:

send, by a mobile device toward a vendor, identification information associated with a user of said mobile device and an identifier associated with said mobile device, said identification information comprising a user name;

receive, by said mobile device from a service provider based on said identification information associated with said user of said mobile device being associated with a mobile device and a corresponding registered user of said service provider, a randomized key string adapted to enable said vendor to authenticate said user after receiving said randomized key string from said mobile device;

communicate, by said mobile device toward said vendor, said randomized key string, said communicating of said randomized key string being adapted to enable authentication of a user transaction by the vendor based on the randomized key string; and

send, by said mobile device toward said vendor, information for completing said user transaction.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said randomized key string is received from said service provider based on said service provider receiving said identification information associated with said user of said mobile device and said identifier associated with said mobile device from said vendor.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said randomized key string comprises at least one of a character, a number, an image, or a sound.

14. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code;

wherein said at least one memory and said computer program code are configured to, with said at least one processor, cause said apparatus to at least:

send, by a mobile device toward a vendor, identification information associated with a user of said mobile device and an identifier associated with said mobile device, said identification information comprising a user name;

receive, by said mobile device from a service provider based on said identification information associated with said user of said mobile device being associated with a mobile device and a corresponding registered user of said service provider, a randomized key string adapted to enable said vendor to authenticate said user after receiving said randomized key string from said mobile device;

communicate, by said mobile device toward said vendor, said randomized key string, said communicating of said randomized key string being adapted to enable authentication of a user transaction by the vendor based on the randomized key string; and

receive, by said mobile device from said vendor, an indication as to whether authentication of said user transaction is successful.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein said randomized key string is received from said service provider based on said service provider receiving said identification information associated with said user of said mobile device and said identifier associated with said mobile device from said vendor.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein said randomized key string comprises at least one of a character, a number, an image, or a sound.
