Abstract

Disclosed is a disinfecting station for at least one portable electronic device. An enclosure is adapted to receive the at least one portable electronic device therein through an openable side that includes a selectively closable door. Each electronic device is exposed to a disinfecting wavelength of light, such as UV light, to disinfect the surface of the device. The enclosure can include supports that minimally contact each device so that the device will be substantially exposed to the UV light. A control circuit can monitor the exposure time and level, and is programmable to activate the UV light based on pre-set criteria. The enclosures may be stacked and provide power and network connectivity to each device while docked therein.

Claims (39)

1. A disinfecting station, comprising:

a substantially opaque enclosure configured to receive at least one device therein through at least one openable side, the enclosure further including means for selectively sealing the at least one openable side;

at least one means for supporting the at least one device; and

at least one ultraviolet light source configured to produce disinfecting wavelengths of light only when the means for selectively sealing is in a closed position;

the at least one ultraviolet light source being activatable to produce disinfecting wavelengths of light, and configured to illuminate substantially each surface of the at least one device for a predetermined period of time when the at least one device is supported by the at least one means for supporting within the enclosure and the means for selectively sealing is in the closed position.

2. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one means for supporting includes a support surface, and the enclosure is configured to receive the at least one device on the support surface.

3. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one means for supporting includes at least one support surface.

4. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , further including a user interface located outside the enclosure, wherein the predetermined period of time is selectable at the user interface.

5. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one device includes at least one electronic device and the disinfecting station includes at least one connector configured to provide one or more of network connectivity to the at least one electronic device, electronic communication with the at least one electronic device, or recharging of the at least one electronic device.

6. The disinfecting station of claim 5 , wherein the at least one electronic device has at least one recharging connector, the at least one connector is configured for recharging the at least one electronic device through the recharging connector thereof, and the at least one connector is one of (i) fixed or (ii) movable relative to an edge of the enclosure.

7. The disinfecting station of claim 6 , wherein the connector is connected with a power source.

8. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the means for selectively sealing is movable between the closed position and an open position and the at least one means for supporting moves upon movement of the means for selectively sealing.

9. The disinfection station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one ultraviolet light source comprises first and second ultraviolet light sources configured so that the first ultraviolet light source illuminates a first surface of the at least one device and the second ultraviolet light source illuminates a second surface of the at least one device.

10. The disinfection station of claim 9 , wherein the first and second ultraviolet light sources are located on substantially opposite sides of the at least one device with the least one device supported by the at least one means for supporting within the enclosure.

11. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure includes at least one reflective surface configured to reflect disinfecting wavelengths of light onto that at least one device.

12. The disinfecting station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one means for supporting is extendable and retractable.

13. A disinfecting station, comprising:

a substantially opaque enclosure configured to receive at least one device therein through at least one openable side, the enclosure further including at least one door for selectively sealing the at least one openable side;

at least one surface adapted to at least partially support the at least one device; and

at least one ultraviolet light source configured to produce disinfecting wavelengths of light only when the at least one door is in a closed position;

the at least one ultraviolet light source being activatable to produce the disinfecting wavelengths of light, and configured to illuminate substantially each surface of the at least one device for a predetermined period of time when the at least one device is supported by the at least one surface within the enclosure and the at least one door is in the closed position.

14. The disinfecting station of claim 13 , further including a user interface located outside the enclosure, wherein the predetermined period of time is selectable at the user interface.

15. The disinfecting station of claim 13 , wherein the at least one device includes at least one electronic device and the disinfecting station includes at least one connector configured to provide one or more of network connectivity to the at least one electronic device, electronic communication with the at least one electronic device, or recharging of the at least one electronic device.

16. The disinfecting station of claim 15 , wherein the at least one electronic device has at least one recharging connector, and wherein the at least one connector is configured to electrically communicate with the at least one electronic device through the recharging connector thereof, and wherein the at least one connector is one of (i) fixed or (ii) movable relative to an edge of the enclosure.

17. The disinfecting station of claim 13 , wherein the at least one door is movable between the closed position and an open position and the at least one surface moves upon movement of the at least one door.

18. The disinfection station of claim 13 , wherein the at least one ultraviolet light source comprises first and second ultraviolet light sources configured so that the first ultraviolet light source illuminates a first surface of the at least one device and the second ultraviolet light source illuminates a second surface of the at least one device.

19. The disinfection station of claim 18 , wherein the first and second ultraviolet light sources are located on substantially opposite sides of the at least one device with the least one device supported by the at least one surface within the enclosure.

20. The disinfecting station of claim 13 , wherein the enclosure includes at least one reflective surface configured to reflect disinfecting wavelengths of light onto that at least one device.

21. The disinfecting station of claim 13 , wherein the at least one surface is extendable and retractable.

22. A method comprising the following steps:

receiving, within a disinfecting station comprising a substantially opaque enclosure having at least one openable side and at least one door movable between a closed position and an open position to selectively seal and open the at least one openable side, at least one device;

illuminating substantially each surface of the at least one device within the disinfecting station with disinfecting wavelengths of light only when the door is in the closed position, and, in turn, disinfecting the at least one portable device; and

preventing illuminating the at least one device with said disinfecting wavelengths of light when the door is not in the closed position.

23. A method as defined in claim 22 , including performing the illuminating step for a predetermined period of time, and wherein the illuminating step includes producing the disinfecting wavelengths of light using at least one ultraviolet light source.

24. The method as defined in claim 23 , wherein the at least one ultraviolet light source comprises first and second ultraviolet light sources configured so that the first ultraviolet light source illuminates a first surface of the at least one device and the second ultraviolet light source illuminates a second surface of the at least one device.

25. The disinfection station of claim 24 , wherein the first and second ultraviolet light sources are located on substantially opposite sides of the at least one device with the least one device located within the enclosure.

26. The method as defined in claim 23 , further comprising selecting the predetermined period of time using a user interface located outside the enclosure.

27.
