Abstract

An apparatus for evaluating leg movement characteristics of a patient is provided. The apparatus comprises a base assembly configured to at least partially support the patient's torso; and first and second leg support assemblies independently pivotably mounted about a pivot axis relative to the base assembly. Each leg support assembly is configured to at least partially support a portion of a respective one of the first and second legs, independent of the support of the torso. Each of the leg support assemblies also comprises: a first leg support member including a foot rotation assembly configured to at least partially retain and support an associated foot of the patient and to rotate it about an axis of rotation relative to the base assembly; and a second leg support member configured for supporting a portion of the leg at a location proximal relative to the first leg support member.

Claims (22)

1. A method for evaluating relative bone movement characteristics of a patient, said patient having at least three interconnected bones, a first bone connected to a second, “free positioned” bone, and a third bone connected to said second bone such that said second, “free positioned” bone is intermediate said first bone and said third bone, said method comprising the steps of:

A) fixing said first bone relative to a frame of a joint testing apparatus;

B) attaching a force application system of the joint testing apparatus to said third bone, said force application system being supported by said frame and configured to move said third bone relative to said first bone and said frame;

C) moving said third bone with said force application system such that said second, “free positioned” bone moves relative to said first bone and said frame;

D) measuring movement of said second, “free positioned” bone relative to said first bone with an imaging system;

E) measuring torque while moving the third bone with the force application system; and

F) aligning a first time series of torque information representative of the measured torque with a second time series of kinematic information representative of the measured movement;

wherein measuring the movement of said second, “free positioned” bone relative to said first bone comprises:

generating a series of images of an image capture volume of the imaging system while moving the third bone with the force application system;

generating a model of the movement of said second, “free positioned” bone relative to said first bone based on the series of images of the image capture volume captured by the imaging system while moving the third bone with the force application system: and

measuring bony kinematics of the movement in six degrees of freedom using the generated model of the movement.

2. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein said imaging system is configured to implement computerized tomography.

3. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein said first, second, and third bones include a bone or bones in one of the following: elbow, wrist, shoulder, ankle, hip, fingers, thorax, spine, pelvis.

4. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein said first, second, and third bones are a femur, a tibia, and a foot, respectively.

5. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein one or more additional bones are disposed intermediate said first and second bone or intermediate said second and third bone.

6. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , further comprising attaching a non-invasive fixture to the second bone, the non-invasive fixture comprising an elongate appendage that projects into an image capture volume of the imaging system.

7. The method as claimed above in claim 6 , wherein attaching the non-invasive fixture to the second bone comprises attaching the elongate appendage to a tibia.

8. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein said imaging system is configured to implement magnetic resonance imaging.

9. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein said imaging system is configured to implement sterofluoroscopy.

10. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , wherein step D comprises generating images of a joint at which said second bone and said first bone are connected to one another.

11. The method as claimed above in claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a hysteresis curve from the aligned first and second time series.
