Abstract

A method for setting up a multiplayer gaming session, the method including: initiating a multiplayer gaming session by a host computing device; generating a list of games and selecting a game from the list of games on the host computing device; determining a list of invitees; generating a group of game configuration options for the selected game by the host computing device; sending a preliminary invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees; launching the selected game on an invitee computing device of each invitee of the list of invitees; selecting game configuration options from the generated group of game configuration options; sending a final invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees.

Claims (52)

1. A method for setting up a multiplayer gaming session comprising:

storing a plurality of multiplayer games in a memory;

initiating a multiplayer gaming session by a host computing device via a network connection based on a user input, the host computing device being communicatively coupled to the memory;

generating, by the host computing device, a list of games based on the storing;

receiving an input indicating a selected game from the list of games;

determining, by the host computing device, a list of invitee computing devices based on the network connection;

generating a group of game configuration options for the selected game by the host computing device based on the selected game;

sending a message to each invitee computing device of the list of invitee computing devices, the message including a preliminary invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees, the preliminary invitation configured to interrupt performance of a current activity of the invitee computing device;

receiving, at the host computing device, an indication that at least one invitee computing device has launched the selected game;

selecting, by the host computing device, game configuration options from the generated group of game configuration options based on the list of invitee computing devices and the selected game; and

sending, by the host computing device, a final invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee computing devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the group of game configuration options is generated by retrieving a configuration file from the memory.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the configuration file includes parameters for game configuration options particular to the selected game.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the memory is a database in communication with the host computing device.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the configuration file is included in a software program of the selected game.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected game is simultaneously launched on the invitee computing device of the at least one selected invitee while the host computing device selects the game configuration options.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the multiplayer gaming session is loaded with the selected game configuration options on the invitee computing device of each invitee computing device of the list of invitee computing devices after receiving the final invitation.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected game is automatically launched on the invitee computing device of each invitee of the list of invitees upon receiving the preliminary invitation.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected game is launched in the background on the invitee computing device of the at least one selected invitee while a second application is running in the foreground.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generated game configuration options are displayed and selected in a user interface of a native operating system.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected game is launched on the host computing device after selecting the game configuration options.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing a computer program to set up a multiplayer gaming session, the computer program comprising executable instructions that cause a computer to:

store a plurality of multiplayer games in a memory;

initiate a multiplayer gaming session by a host computing device via a network connection based on a user input;

generate a list of games based on the storing;

receive an input indicating a selected game from the list of games;

determine a list of invitee computing devices based on the network connection;

generate a group of game configuration options for the selected game by the host computing device based on the selected game;

send a message to each invitee computing device of the list of invitee computing devices, the message including a preliminary invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees;

receiving, at the host computing device an indication that at least on invitee computing device has launched the selected game on an invitee computing device of each invitee of the list of invitees;

select game configuration options from the generated group of game configuration options based on the list of invitee computing devices and the selected game; and

send a final invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee computing device.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the group of game configuration options is generated by retrieving a configuration file from the memory.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the memory is a database in communication with the host computing device.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the configuration file is included in a software program of the selected game.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the selected game is simultaneously launched on the invitee computing device of the at least one selected invitee while the host computing device selects the game configuration options.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the multiplayer gaming session is loaded with the selected game configuration options on the invitee computing device after receiving the final invitation.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the generated game configuration options are displayed and selected in a user interface of a native operating system.

19. A host computing device for setting up a multiplayer gaming session, the host computing device comprising:

a game session generator configured to

initiate a multiplayer gaming session,

generate a list of games, and

select a game from the list of games;

an invitee generator configured to determine a list of invitees;

a game configuration generator configured to

generate a group of game configuration options, and

select game configuration options from the generated group of configuration options; and

an invitation transmitter configured to

send a preliminary invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees,

launch the selected game on an invitee computing device of each invitee of the list of invitees, and

send a final invitation to the multiplayer gaming session to each invitee of the list of invitees.

20. The host computing device of claim 19 , wherein the game configuration generator retrieves a configuration file from a storage medium, the configuration file including parameters for game configuration options particular to the selected game.
