Abstract

This document provides methods and materials related to the non-invasive measurement of analytes in blood.

Claims (34)

1. A method for assessing a level of an analyte within a mammal, wherein the method comprises:

obtaining, by a computational device, electrocardiogram results from the mammal;

identifying one or more characteristics of the mammal, wherein the one or more characteristics include at least one characteristic identified independently of the electrocardiogram results from the mammal;

selecting, from among a plurality of electrocardiogram signal templates, a particular electrocardiogram signal template that corresponds to the one or more characteristics of the mammal, wherein each electrocardiogram signal template in the plurality of electrocardiogram signal templates:

(i) corresponds to a respective set of one or more mammalian characteristics, and

(ii) associates a baseline electrocardiogram result with a baseline level of the analyte for the respective set of mammalian characteristics to which the electrocardiogram signal template corresponds; and

comparing the electrocardiogram results from the mammal to the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template to obtain an indication of the level of the analyte in the mammal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrocardiogram results from the mammal, when compared to the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template, indicate that the level of the analyte in the mammal is within a normal physiologic range of levels for the analyte.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrocardiogram results from the mammal, when compared to the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template, indicate that the level of the analyte in the mammal is outside a normal physiologic range of levels for the analyte.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more characteristics of the mammal comprise a heart rate of the mammal during a time interval associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal; and

selecting the particular electrocardiogram signal template that corresponds to the one or more characteristics of the mammal comprises selecting an electrocardiogram signal template that corresponds to a limited range of heart rates that includes the heart rate of the mammal during the time interval associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more characteristics of the mammal comprise a body position of the mammal during a time interval associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal; and

selecting the particular electrocardiogram signal template that corresponds to the one or more characteristics of the mammal comprises selecting an electrocardiogram signal template that corresponds to the body position of the mammal during the time interval associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the body position of the mammal is supine, prone, on side, sitting up, or standing.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more characteristics of the mammal comprise a heart rate and a body position of the mammal during a time interval associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the electrocardiogram results from the mammal include representations of a series of cardiac cycles of the mammal over a time interval;

the method further comprises generating a representation of an averaged cardiac cycle by averaging the representations of multiple cardiac cycles from the series of cardiac cycles over the time interval; and

comparing the electrocardiogram results from the mammal to the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template to obtain the indication of the level of the analyte in the mammal comprises comparing the representation of the averaged cardiac cycle to the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing the electrocardiogram results from the mammal to the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template to obtain the indication of the level of the analyte in the mammal comprises:

determining a difference between the electrocardiogram results from the mammal and the baseline electrocardiogram result of the selected particular electrocardiogram signal template; and

determining the level of the analyte in the mammal based on the difference.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, before obtaining the electrocardiogram results from the mammal, generating the plurality of electrocardiogram signal templates using electrocardiogram results from one or more mammals and observed levels of the analyte within the one or more mammals during times associated with the electrocardiogram results.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the observed levels of the analyte within the one or more mammals were obtained as a result of analyzing blood samples from the one or more mammals.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more mammals comprise the mammal.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more mammals comprise mammals other than the mammal.

15. The method of claim 11 , comprising:

directing at least one of the one or more mammals to exercise so as to elevate a heart rate of the at least one mammal; and

generating an electrocardiogram signal template based on electrocardiogram results of the at least one mammal and an observed level of the analyte in the at least one mammal while the at least one mammal's heart rate is elevated as a result of the exercise.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the analyte is potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, or glucose.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the one or more characteristics of the mammal includes identifying a body position of the mammal using signals detected by an accelerometer affixed to the mammal during a time associated with the electrocardiogram results from the mammal.
