Abstract

Embodiments of a tie plate sorter are disclosed wherein the tie plates are sorted and fed to an output device for further feeding to a tie plate distribution system. The tie plates may be oriented as needed. Exemplary methods are also provided.

Claims (21)

1. A tie plate sorter assembly, comprising:

a first substantially cylindrical driving ring and a second cylindrical driving ring;

at least one tie plate receiving surface extending between said first and second substantially cylindrical driving rings;

said at least one tie plate receiving surface having a plurality of pass through apertures spaced circumferentially about said at least one tie plate receiving surface which allow at least one tie plate to pass from an interior of said sorter assembly to an exterior;

a magnetic retaining mechanism engaging said at least one tie plate receiving surface for retaining said at least one tie plate until said tie plate is released.

2. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 further comprising a pocket adjacent to said plurality of pass through apertures.

3. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is electromagnetic.

4. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated depending on the position of said tie plate sorter.

5. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated electrically.

6. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one retaining mechanism is actuated mechanically.

7. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 1 further comprising a discharge conveyor disposed adjacent to said tie plate sorter assembly.

8. A tie plate sorter assembly, comprising:

a tie plate receiver having a first axial end and a second axial end including a driving ring at each of said ends;

at least one side extending between said first end and said second end;

at least one location within said receiver wherein said tie plates are deposited;

a plurality of magnetic retaining mechanisms disposed about said receiver;

a plurality of apertures spaced circumferentially about said receiver;

said magnetic retaining mechanisms retaining tie plates in a first location and releasing said tie plates in a second location.

9. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 8 further comprising a discharge conveyor disposed externally from said receiver.

10. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 8 , said tie plate receiver being circular or non-circular in cross-section.

11. The tie plate sorter assembly of claim 8 wherein said magnetic retaining mechanism is actuated mechanically, electrically or electro mechanically.
