Abstract

A battery management system for monitoring battery cells of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) coupled to a medical imaging load. The battery management system includes a first slave configured to obtain an operating parameter of a first battery cell. The first slave is configured to determine health of the first battery cell based at least in part on the operating parameter. The first slave is configured to generate a signal indicating the health of the first battery cell to communicate serially, via at least a second slave, to a master.

Claims (30)

1. A battery management system for monitoring battery cells of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) coupled to a medical imaging load, comprising:

a first slave microcontroller having a processor configured to:

obtain, from a sensor, an operating parameter of a first battery cell,

wherein the operating parameter is a temperature, state of charge (SOC), a voltage, or any combination thereof;

determine a health associated with safe operating conditions of the first battery cell based at least in part on the operating parameter; and

generate a signal indicating the health of the first battery cell; and

serially communicate the signal to a second slave microcontroller.

2. The battery management system of claim 1 , comprising the second slave microcontroller configured to serially communicate the health of the first battery cell to a third slave microcontroller or a master microcontroller.

3. The battery management system of claim 2 , wherein the first slave microcontroller is configured to communicate, via an optocoupler, with the second slave microcontroller while electrically isolating the first and second slave microcontrollers from one another.

4. The battery management system of claim 1 , comprising the master microcontroller configured to:

receive a second signal indicating the health of the first battery cell from the second slave microcontroller; and

generate a third signal indicating health of a plurality of battery cells comprising the first battery cell, wherein a drawer comprises the plurality of battery cells.

5. The battery management system of claim 1 , wherein the first slave microcontroller is configured to determine health of a second battery cell.

6. The battery management system of claim 5 , wherein the first slave microcontroller is configured to control balance of a state of charge (SOC) of the first battery cell with respect to the second battery cell by actively dissipating energy from the first battery cell or the second battery cell with greater charge.

7. The battery management system of claim 1 , wherein the first slave microcontroller is configured to compare the temperature of the first battery cell to a threshold temperature.

8. A battery management system for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configured to provide power to a medical imaging load, comprising:

a drawer comprising:

a plurality of battery cells;

a plurality of slave microcontrollers, wherein each slave microcontroller of the plurality of slave microcontrollers has a respective processor configured to monitor a health associated with safe operating conditions of one or more of the plurality of battery cells, wherein at least one slave microcontroller of the plurality of slave microcontrollers is configured, via its respective processor, to generate a first signal indicating the health of the plurality of battery cells, and wherein the drawer comprises a second slave microcontroller configured, via its respective processor, to receive the first signal from the first slave microcontroller and to generate a second signal indicating health of the plurality of battery cells; and

a master microcontroller having a processor configured to receive the second signal and to generate a third signal based on the health of the plurality of battery cells.

9. The battery management system of claim 8 , wherein the master microcontroller is configured to open a contactor that couples the plurality of battery cells to a DC-DC converter based on the third signal, thereby disabling flow of charge between the medical imaging load and the plurality of battery cells.

10. The battery management system of claim 8 , wherein the master microcontroller is configured to send a signal to a DC-DC converter to enable flow of charge from the plurality of battery cells onto the medical imaging load.

11. The battery management system of claim 8 , wherein each slave microcontroller of the plurality of slave microcontrollers is configured to monitor health of at least two battery cells of the plurality of battery cells.

12. A battery management system for monitoring battery cells of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) coupled to a medical imaging load, comprising:

a first slave microcontroller having a processor configured to:

obtain, from a sensor, an operating parameter of a first battery cell,

wherein the operating parameter is a temperature;

determine a health associated with safe operating conditions of the first battery cell based at least in part on the temperature by comparing the temperature to a threshold temperature; and

generate a signal indicating the health of the first battery cell; and

serially communicate the signal to a second slave microcontroller.
