Abstract

Medical devices are provided, comprising a medical device and a sensor.

Claims (55)

1. A medical device, comprising:

a tibial stem of an implantable knee prosthesis, the tibial stem comprising an outer surface and a body, the body located within the outer surface and comprising an internal canal; and

a first sensor module located entirely within the body of the tibial stem, the first sensor module comprising components disposed in a single housing, the components comprising a power supply, a sensor channel and a communication interface, the power supply comprising a battery; the sensor channel comprising a power management circuit to manage transport of voltage from the battery to a sensor of the sensor channel via a conductor, the sensor comprising sensors including both of a gyroscope and an accelerometer.

2. The medical device according to claim 1 , wherein said medical device is sterile.

3. A method, comprising:

sensing a physical quantity using the medical device of claim 1 ; and

generating a representation of the sensed quantity.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: wherein the sensing and generating are performed by a first sensor module; and transmitting wirelessly the representation of the sensed quantity to a second sensor module that is remote from the first sensor module.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: wherein the sensing and generating are performed by a first sensor module; and receiving with the first sensor module data from a second sensor module that is remote from the first sensor module.

6. A system, comprising:

a first sensor module according to claim 1 ; and

a second sensor module configured to communicate with the first sensor module.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the second sensor module is configured to be attached to an organism.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the first sensor module is configured to power the second sensor module.

9. A method comprising:

obtaining data from sensors positioned at a plurality of locations within the medical device according to claim 1 of a subject;

storing the data in a memory device located within the medical device; and

transferring the data from the memory to a location outside the medical device.

10. A method for detecting and/or recording an event in a subject with the medical device according to claim 1 , comprising the step of interrogating at a desired point in time an activity of one or more sensors within the medical device, and recording said activity.

11. A method for imaging a medical device in a tibia bone, comprising the steps of

(a) detecting a location of one or more sensors in the medical device according to claim 1 located in a tibia of a subject; and

(b) visually displaying the location of said one or more sensors, such that an image of the medical device, or a portion thereof, in the tibia bone is created.

12. A method for inserting the medical device according to claim 1 , comprising the steps of

(a) inserting the medical device into a tibial of a subject to provide a placement of the implantable medical device in the subject; and

(b) imaging the placement of said medical device according to a method comprising:

obtaining data from sensors positioned at a plurality of locations within the implantable medical device located in the subject; and

visually displaying a relative anatomical location of said sensors such that an image of the medical device is created.

13. A method for examining the medical device according to claim 1 which has been previously inserted into a patient, comprising the step of imaging the medical device according to a method comprising:

obtaining data from sensors positioned at a plurality of locations within the implantable medical device located in the tibia of the patient; and

visually displaying a relative anatomical location of said sensors such that an image of the medical device is created.

14. A method of monitoring a medical device within a subject, comprising:

(a) transmitting a wireless electrical signal from a location outside the body to a location inside the subject's body;

(b) receiving the signal at a sensor positioned on a knee prosthesis according claim 1 located inside the tibia of the subject;

(c) powering the sensor using the battery;

(d) sensing data at the sensor; and

(e) outputting the sensed data from the sensor to a receiving unit located outside of the body.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium whose stored contents configure a computing system to perform a method, the method comprising:

(a) identifying a subject, the identified subject having the tibial stem of the knee prosthesis according to claim 1 inserted into a tibia of the subject, where the communication interface of the tibial stem comprises a wireless interface in communication with the sensor;

(b) directing a wireless interrogation unit to collect sensor data from the sensor; and

(c) receiving the collected sensor data.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 whose stored contents configure a computing system to perform a method, the method further comprising:

(a) identifying a plurality of subjects, each identified subject having a tibial stem of a respective knee prosthesis according to claim 1 inserted into a tibia of each respective identified subject, where the communication interface of the tibial stem comprises a wireless interface in communication with a respective sensor;

(b) directing a wireless interrogation unit associated with each identified subject to collect sensor data from at least one of the respective sensors;

(c) receiving the collected sensor data; and

(d) aggregating the collected sensor data.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 whose stored contents configure a computing system to perform a method, the method further comprising:

(a) removing sensitive subject data from the collected sensor data; and

(b) parsing the aggregated data according to a type of sensor.

18. A method for determining degradation of a medical device in a subject, comprising the steps of:

a) providing to a subject a medical device according to claim 1 , where the tibial stem of the knee prosthesis has been inserted into the tibia of the subject; and

b) detecting a change in a sensor, and thus determining degradation of the medical device.

19. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor module is located in the internal canal of the tibial stem.

20. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the power management circuit provides intermittent voltage to the sensor in response to a signal.

21. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is flexible circuitry.

22. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein an antenna for receiving and transmitting wireless signal is located within the housing.
