Abstract

A self-stabilizing small arm having a barrel assembly rigidly connected to a stock assembly. The small arm includes at least one shooter interface surface and a stabilization assembly controlling the relative position of the shooter interface surface and the barrel assembly or stock assembly. The stabilization assembly includes (i) at least one movement sensor; (ii) at least one actuator; and (iii) a controller using signals from the movement sensor to operate the actuator in order to compensate for unintended movement of the small arm.

Claims (27)

1. A self-stabilizing rifle comprising:

a. a barrel assembly rigidly connected to a stock assembly;

b. a fore-grip connected to the barrel assembly by a stabilization assembly;

c. wherein the stabilization assembly includes:

i. at least two movement sensors;

ii. at least two actuators, the sensors and actuators compensating for movement in a plane orthogonal to a long axis of the barrel assembly;

iii. a controller using signals from the movement sensors to operate the actuators in order to compensate for unintended movement of the fore-grip;

iv. a linear bearing limited to movement in a windage direction and a linear bearing limited to movement in an elevation direction; and

d. wherein the actuators are rotational servo motors and the servo motors are connected to linkages which translate rotational motion into substantially linear motion.

2. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the actuators impart substantially linear movement to the barrel assembly in the plane.

3. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the stabilization assembly does not compensate for movement frequencies outside of 0.1 to 10 Hz.

4. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 3 , wherein the stabilization assembly does not compensate for movement frequencies outside of 0.5 to 5 Hz.

5. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the fore-grip is a vertical grip connected to the barrel assembly.

6. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the rifle is a M4 type rifle.

7. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the controller utilizes a proportional integral derivative algorithm in compensating for unintended movement of the fore-grip.

8. A self-stabilizing small arm comprising:

a. a barrel assembly rigidly connected to a stock assembly;

b. at least one shooter interface surface on the small arm;

c. a stabilization assembly controlling the relative position of the shooter interface surface and the barrel assembly or stock assembly, the stabilization assembly including:

i. at least two movement sensors;

ii. at least two actuators, the sensors and actuators compensating for movement in a plane orthogonal to a long axis of the barrel assembly;

iii. a controller using signals from the movement sensors to operate the actuators in order to compensate for unintended movement of the small arm;

iv. a linear bearing limited to movement in a windage direction and a linear bearing limited to movement in an elevation direction; and

d. wherein the actuators are rotational servo motors and the servo motors are connected to linkages which translate rotational motion into substantially linear motion.

9. The self-stabilizing small arm of claim 8 , wherein the shooter interface surface is a fore-grip associated with the barrel assembly.

10. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 4 , wherein a band pass filter is used to eliminate the movement frequencies outside of 0.5 to 5 Hz.

11. The self-stabilizing rifle of claim 1 , wherein the actuators compensate for movement by adjusting the position of the barrel assembly relative to the fore-grip.
