Abstract

Methods of projecting an image onto a patient to aid delivery of proton therapy, including capturing a first image of a patient's treatment volume, processing the image to generate a treatment volume image corresponding to at least a portion of the treatment volume, generating a scan pattern to deliver a particle beamline to at least a portion of the treatment volume, projecting the treatment volume image and the scan pattern onto the skin of the patient proximate the treatment volume, and delivering the particle beamline to at least a portion of the treatment volume to match dimensions of the treatment volume image and the scan pattern.

Claims (28)

1. A method of projecting an image of a treatment volume onto a patient to aid in delivery of a particle beamline during proton therapy, comprising:

capturing a first image of a patient's treatment volume;

processing the image to generate a treatment volume image corresponding to at least a portion of the treatment volume;

generating a scan pattern to deliver a particle beamline to at least a portion of the treatment volume;

projecting the treatment volume image and the scan pattern onto the skin of the patient proximate the treatment volume; and

delivering the particle beamline to at least a portion of the treatment volume to match dimensions of the treatment volume image and the scan pattern.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scan pattern includes an x-y scan area corresponding to a largest area of the treatment volume.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scan pattern includes an x-y scan area simulating a layer by layer scan process of the treatment volume at each layer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scan pattern includes multiple x-y profiles/layers.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scan pattern is a moving image to simulate a pencil-beam scan of the treatment volume.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

recording the treatment volume image using an external camera; and

displaying what is seen in the beams eye view based on the treatment volume image.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating alignment markers and/or patient identifiers of the patient; and

projecting the alignment markers and/or patient identifiers onto a projection surface of a proton therapy room.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the projection surface is the patient's skin.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment volume image includes instructions informing the patient when patient movement is allowed.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the instructions include a projection of one color to indicate that patient movement is allowed and a projection of another color to indicate that patient movement is prohibited.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising projecting entertainment/media content onto one or more of the patient, a wall, and a screen.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

projecting a visual alignment marker onto the patient;

recording the visual alignment marker; and

processing the visual alignment marker using computer vision to perform an initial three-dimensional isocenter positioning operation.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particle beamline includes proton pencil-beam-scanning of the patient, the method further comprising:

moving an image projector into the particle beamline of a proton delivery system to project the image onto the skin of the patient proximate the treatment volume; and

removing the image projector from the beamline during pencil-beam-scanning treatment of the patient.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the projecting operation includes directing the treatment volume image using one or more of a mirror, a light tube, and off-beamline projector.
