Abstract

The present invention relates to a gas detector cell and cell unit for optical detection of a predetermined gas, the cell being provided with optical means for investigating a gas sample present in the cell. The cell is constituted by a volume enclosed in a container, at least part of the container wall being constituted by a membrane, the membrane being provided with openings allowing diffusion of gas therethrough, and the membrane openings being provided with a catalyst for converting the gas diffusing therethrough to said predetermined gas.

Claims (16)

1. A gas detector for optical detection of a predetermined gas, the gas detector comprising:

an optical detector cell defining a chamber forming a volume;

a catalyst membrane positioned proximate the volume of the chamber and allowing passage through the catalyst membrane of a predetermined gas and a sample gas into and out of the formed volume of the chamber, the catalyst membrane configured to convert the predetermined gas diffusing through the catalyst membrane into the sample gas proximate to a flow of the predetermined gas entering the formed volume;

an optical detector for investigating the sample gas and determining a presence of the predetermined gas within the formed volume of the chamber, the optical detector including a pulsed source being pulsed at a first frequency and a second frequency for detecting the gas, the second frequency corresponding to an increase in frequency over the first frequency by a predetermined factor; and

a flame arrestor configured to allow passage of a gas and deny the passage of a flame to isolate the catalyst membrane from a surrounding environment.

2. The gas detector according to claim 1 , wherein the investigating of the sample gas includes:

estimating a gas level within the formed volume of the chamber based at least in part on the pulsed source being pulsed at the first frequency;

estimating the gas level within the formed volume of the chamber based at least in part on the pulse source being pulsed at the second frequency; and

averaging the estimated gas levels over a predefined period of time.

3. The gas detector according to claim 2 , wherein the determined presence of the predetermined gas within the formed volume of the chamber is based at least in part on the averaged estimated gas levels over the predefined period of time.

4. The gas detector according to claim 2 , wherein the averaging of the estimated gas levels over a predefined period of time is based at least in part on previous measurements.

5. The gas detector according to claim 2 , wherein the estimated gas level associated with the pulsed source being pulsed at the first frequency is at least at a predetermined alarm limit; and

the average estimated gas levels over the predefined period of time avoiding a false alarm.

6. The gas detector according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined factor is a multiple value indicating a quantity by which the first frequency is multiplied.

7. The gas detector according to claim 6 , wherein the multiple value is 30.

8. The gas detector according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined gas is H 2 S, the sample gas is SO 2 and the catalyst membrane is configured to convert H 2 S passing into the formed volume to SO 2 .
