Abstract

Current krill oil extracts are liquid at room temperature and include only about 45-55% phospholipids. As the purity of phospholipids increases, the extracts become more viscous, making them difficult to handle and process. The invention mixes these pure materials with viscosity-reducing agents to make them amenable to processes such as encapsulation. Thus the invention retains the useful liquid characteristics of known krill extracts while providing much higher concentrations of phospholipids.

Claims (3)

1. An oral capsule for human use including an encapsulated liquid composition, wherein the liquid composition has a viscosity of less than 3000 mPas when measured at a temperature within the range 25-70° C., wherein the composition comprises (i) from 80 to 95% by weight of a phospholipid-containing krill extract which has a viscosity of at least 3000 mPas when measured at a temperature where the liquid composition has a viscosity of less than 3000 mPa·s and (ii) from 5% to 15% by weight of a viscosity-reducing agent comprising a combination of a lower alcohol selected from the group consisting of ethanol, 2-propanol, 1-propanol and a second additive selected from the group consisting of medium chain triglycerides and polyethylene glycol, so that the liquid composition has a krill phospholipid concentration of at least 680 mg/ml.

2. The capsule of claim 1 , wherein the liquid composition has a viscosity of less than 3000 mPa·s when measured at a temperature within the range 25-70° C.

3. The capsule of claim 1 , wherein the krill phospholipids are a mixture of phospholipid compounds of formula (I) as defined herein:
