Abstract

A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one-dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

Claims (64)

1. A method, comprising:

displaying a user interface on a touch screen display on a portable electronic device, wherein the user interface includes:

a displayed window of an application;

while displaying the displayed window of the application, detecting a gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, displaying the displayed window of the application, one or more partially hidden windows of the application, and an icon separate and distinct from the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, wherein the icon is not displayed prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display;

while displaying the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving the displayed window partially or fully off the touch screen display and moving a first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting a gesture on the icon, enlarging the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display.

2. The method of claim 1 including:

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving a second partially hidden window off the touch screen display.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detected swipe gesture is a left-to-right swipe gesture, including:

in response to detecting the left-to-right swipe gesture:

moving the displayed window partially off-screen to the right,

moving the first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen display, and

moving a second partially hidden window completely off-screen.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application is a web browser.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the displayed window of the application is displayed at a first size prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, and is displayed at a second size different from the first size in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the displayed window of the application and the one or more partially hidden windows of the application are displayed in a non-overlapping arrangement.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display is enlarged to fill the touch screen display.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to detecting the gesture on the icon, ceasing to display the icon and the one or more partially hidden windows.

9. A portable electronic device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

a program, wherein the program is stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the program including instructions for:

displaying a user interface on the touch screen display, wherein the user interface includes a displayed window of an application;

while displaying the displayed window of the application, detecting a gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, displaying the displayed window of the application, one or more partially hidden windows of the application, and an icon separate and distinct from the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, wherein the icon is not displayed prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display;

while displaying the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving the displayed window partially or fully off the touch screen display and moving a first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting a gesture on the icon, enlarging the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display.

10. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , including:

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving a second partially hidden window off the touch screen display.

11. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the detected swipe gesture is a left-to-right swipe gesture, including:

in response to detecting the left-to-right swipe gesture:

moving the displayed window partially off-screen to the right, moving the first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen.

12. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the application is a web browser.

13. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the displayed window of the application is displayed at a first size prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, and is displayed at a second size different from the first size in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display.

14. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the displayed window of the application and the one or more partially hidden windows of the application are displayed in a non-overlapping arrangement.

15. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display is enlarged to fill the touch screen display.

16. The portable electronic device of claim 9 , the program further including instructions for:

in response to detecting the gesture on the icon, ceasing to display the icon and the one or more partially hidden windows.

17. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which, when executed by a portable electronic device with a touch screen display, cause the device to perform a method of:

displaying a user interface on the touch screen display on the portable electronic device, wherein the user interface includes:

a displayed window of an application;

while displaying the displayed window of the application, detecting a gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, displaying the displayed window of the application, one or more partially hidden windows of the application, and an icon separate and distinct from the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, wherein the icon is not displayed prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display;

while displaying the displayed window and the one or more partially hidden windows, detecting a swipe gesture on the touch screen display;

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving the displayed window partially or fully off the touch screen display and moving a first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting a gesture on the icon, enlarging the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , including:

in response to detecting the swipe gesture, moving a second partially hidden window off the touch screen display.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the detected swipe gesture is a left-to-right swipe gesture, including:

in response to detecting the left-to-right swipe gesture:

moving the displayed window partially off-screen to the right,

moving the first partially hidden window to the center of the touch screen display, and

moving a second partially hidden window completely off-screen.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the application is a web browser.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the displayed window of the application is displayed at a first size prior to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display, and is displayed at a second size different from the first size in response to detecting the gesture on the touch screen display.

22. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the displayed window of the application and the one or more partially hidden windows of the application are displayed in a non-overlapping arrangement.

23. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the window of the application in the center of the touch screen display is enlarged to fill the touch screen display.

24. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , including:

in response to detecting the gesture on the icon, ceasing to display the icon and the one or more partially hidden windows.
