Abstract

The invention relates to an online web-based medical database and collaboration tool that can be used by surgeons, hospitals, medical institutions, manufacturers and others to collect, store, analyze and harvest clinical and radiologic data. The clinical registry system includes a registry database and a registry processor in electrical communication with the registry database and performing operations on the registry database. The registry database stores patient data from a plurality of sites, a plurality of registry groups and an indicator for each of the plurality of sites identifying which of the plurality of registry groups each site is a member. The members of a registry group have access to aggregated data and comparative reports of all the registry group members in real-time. Each site may be a member of one registry group, multiple registry groups, or no registry groups.

Claims (56)

1. A system for generating a comparative report of clinical data comprising:

a registry database for storing a plurality of patient records received from a plurality of medical institutions, wherein:

each patient record comprises patient data,

each patient record is associated with at least one type of medical service,

each patient record is associated with one of the plurality of medical institutions,

each medical institution of the plurality of medical institutions belongs to at least one registry group of a plurality of registry groups, and

each registry group comprises two or more medical institutions of the plurality of medical institutions;

a processor in electrical communication with the registry database;

a memory storing instructions thereon wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive, via a network, from a user located at a first medical institution, a request for the comparative report, wherein the request comprises a particular type of medical service;

determine that the first medical institution belongs to a first registry group, wherein the first registry group comprises the first medical institution and a second medical institution;

cull the registry database to identify responsive patient records that are responsive to the request, wherein:

each patient record of the responsive patient records is associated with the particular type of medical service, and

the responsive patient records comprises a first set of patient records and a second set of patient records, wherein each patient record of the first set is associated with the first medical institution, and each patient record of the second set is associated with the second medical institution;

determine a first quality indicator based on first patient data contained in the first set of patient records, and determine a second quality indicator based on second patient data contained in the second set of patient records;

generate the comparative report comprising a first illustration representing the first quality indicator and a second illustration representing the second quality indicator; and

transmit the comparative report to the user.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first registry group comprises at least one of a vascular registry, an oncology registry, a national registry, and a regional registry.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each patient record comprises at least one of patient medical condition information, pre-operative information, post-operative information, procedure type, operation information, anesthesia information, provider information, and hospital information.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

said determining the first quality indicator comprises:

determining, based on the first patient data, a first rate of complications associated with the particular type of medical service conducted by the first medical institution, and

said determining the second quality indicator comprises:

determining, based on the second patient data, a second rate of complications associated with the particular type of medical service conducted by the second medical institution.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the comparative report comprises a bar graph representing:

the first medical institution and the second medical institution on the x-axis, and

the first quality indicator and the second quality indicator on the y-axis, and wherein each quality indicator is plotted as a function of its respective medical institution.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the comparative report comprises:

an illustration of an average quality indicator, wherein the average quality indicator corresponds to the mathematical average of a plurality of quality indicators associated with at least a subset of the plurality of medical institutions.

7. A method for generating a comparative report of clinical data comprising:

receiving at a processor, from a user located at a first medical institution, a request for the comparative report, wherein the processor is in electrical communication with a registry database that stores a plurality of patient records received from a plurality of medical institutions, wherein:

each patient record comprises patient data,

each patient record is associated with at least one type of medical service,

each patient record is associated with one of a plurality of medical institutions,

each medical institution of the plurality of medical institutions belongs to at least one registry group of a plurality of registry groups,

each registry group comprises two or more medical institutions of the plurality of medical institutions,

the request comprises a particular type of medical service,

determining, by the processor, that the first medical institution belongs to a first registry group comprising the first medical institution and a second medical institution;

culling the registry database to responsive patient records that are responsive to the request, wherein:

each patient record of the responsive patient records is associated with the particular type of medical service, and

the responsive patient records comprise a first set of patient records and a second set of patient records, wherein each patient record of the first set is associated with the first medical institution and each patient record of the second set is associated with the second medical institution;

determining a first quality indicator based on first patient data contained in the first set of patient records, and determining a second quality indicator based on second patient data contained in the second set of patient records;

generating the comparative report comprising a first illustration of the first quality indicator and a second illustration of the second quality indicator; and

transmitting the comparative report to the user.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first registry group comprises at least one of a vascular registry, an oncology registry, a national registry, and a regional registry.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein each patient record comprises at least one of: patient medical condition information, pre-operative information, post-operative information, procedure type, operation information, anesthesia information, provider information, and hospital information.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

said determining the first quality indicator comprises:

determining, based on the first patient data, a first rate of complications associated with the particular type of medical service conducted by the first medical institution, and

said determining the second quality indicator comprises:

determining, based on the second patient data, a second rate of complications associated with the particular type of medical service conducted by the second medical institution.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the comparative report comprises a bar graph representing:

the first medical institution and the second medical institution on the x-axis, and

the first quality indicator and the second quality indicator on the y-axis, and wherein each quality indicator is plotted as a function of its respective medical institution.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the comparative report comprises:

an illustration of an average quality indicator, wherein the average quality indicator corresponds to a mathematical average of a plurality of quality indicators associated with at least a subset of the plurality of medical institutions.
