Abstract

Active metal and active metal intercalation electrode structures and battery cells having ionically conductive protective architecture including an active metal (e.g., lithium) conductive impervious layer separated from the electrode (anode) by a porous separator impregnated with a non-aqueous electrolyte (anolyte). This protective architecture prevents the active metal from deleterious reaction with the environment on the other (cathode) side of the impervious layer, which may include aqueous or non-aqueous liquid electrolytes (catholytes) and/or a variety electrochemically active materials, including liquid, solid and gaseous oxidizers. Safety additives and designs that facilitate manufacture are also provided.

Claims (20)

1. A lithium ion battery cell, comprising:

a lithium ion battery cathode;

a lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte in direct contact with the lithium ion cathode; and

a protected lithium anode comprising:

i) a lithium metal intercalating material; and

ii) a substantially impervious ionically conductive layer that isolates the lithium ion battery electrolyte from direct contact with the anode intercalating material.

2. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the lithium metal intercalating material is carbon or lithiated carbon.

3. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte consists essentially of one or more organic solvent and at least a lithium salt dissolved therein.

4. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 2 , wherein the lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte consists essentially of one or more organic solvent and at least a lithium salt dissolved therein.

5. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte comprises an ionic liquid.

6. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 2 wherein the lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte comprises an ionic liquid.

7. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the lithium ion battery cathode comprises an electrochemically active component that is lithium metal oxide.

8. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 7 , wherein the lithium metal oxide comprises one or more of cobalt, nickel or manganese.

9. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the protected lithium anode further comprising a non-aqueous anolyte in direct contact with the lithium metal intercalating material and the substantially impervious ionically conductive layer.

10. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 9 , wherein the non-aqueous anolyte comprises an ionic liquid.

11. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the lithium ion battery non-aqueous liquid electrolyte is not chemically compatible or in direct contact with the lithium metal intercalating material.

12. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the protected lithium anode further comprises a lithium alloying material.

13. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 12 , wherein the lithium alloying material is silicon or tin.

14. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the cell lacks a cathode having as its electrochemically active component oxygen or sulfur.

15. The lithium ion battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the substantially impervious layer has a thickness in the range of 10 to 100 μm.
