Abstract

The present disclosure describes systems and methods that utilize a tracheal tube with a shaped evacuation port. An evacuation port coupled to a suction lumen may be shaped to reduce air channel formation within the suction lumen, which in turn may improve the suctioning force and efficiency. The shaped evacuation ports may be generally oval or may be shaped to minimize a height dimension while maintaining a suitable cross-sectional area. In particular embodiments, the shaped evacuation ports may have cross-sectional areas that correspond to a cross-sectional area of the suction lumen.

Claims (31)

1. A tracheal tube, comprising

a conduit configured to deliver gas to a patient's airway;

an inflatable cuff coupled to an exterior wall of the conduit and comprising a proximal shoulder and a distal shoulder;

a suction lumen formed between the exterior wall and an inner wall of the conduit; and

an evacuation port fluidly coupled to the suction lumen, wherein the evacuation port forms an ovoid opening through the exterior wall of the conduit, the ovoid opening formed through the exterior wall and such that a largest circumferential cross-sectional area of the ovoid opening of the evacuation port is approximately equal to and has a different shape than a circumferential cross-sectional area of the suction lumen, wherein the opening comprises a major diameter and a minor diameter, the minor diameter being along an air flow path of the conduit.

2. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , wherein the opening is adjacent to the proximal shoulder of the inflatable cuff.

3. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , wherein the cross-sectional area of the suction lumen is a cross section orthogonal to an air flow path of the conduit.

4. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , wherein an inner diameter of the suction lumen is approximately 5 millimeters of less.

5. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , wherein the opening comprises an ellipse.

6. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , comprising a Murphy's eye adjacent to a distal end of the conduit.

7. The tracheal tube of claim 1 , comprising a connector disposed on a proximal end of the conduit and configured to couple the tracheal tube to an auxiliary device.

8. A system, comprising:

a tracheal tube comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a ventilation lumen configured to deliver gas to a patient's airway;

an inflatable cuff coupled to an exterior wall of the tracheal tube and comprising a proximal shoulder and a distal shoulder;

a suction lumen formed within a wall of the tracheal tube; and

an ovoid opening extending through the exterior wall of the tracheal tube and fluidly coupled to the suction lumen, wherein the ovoid opening has a geometry configured to reduce air channel formation during suctioning through the suction lumen relative to a round opening, wherein a cross-sectional diameter of the suction lumen is less than a largest major diameter across the ovoid opening and greater than a minor diameter of the ovoid opening orthogonal to the major diameter, wherein the opening comprises a major diameter and a minor diameter, the minor diameter being along an air flow path of the conduit, and wherein a circumferential cross-sectional area of the ovoid opening has a different shape than the circumferential cross-sectional area of the suction lumen.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the opening is adjacent to the proximal shoulder of the inflatable cuff.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the ovoid opening is equal to the cross-sectional area of the suction lumen.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the major diameter forms part of a circumference of the conduit.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the opening comprises an ellipse.

13. The system of claim 8 , comprising a Murphy's eye adjacent to the distal end of the tracheal tube.

14. The system of claim 8 , comprising a connector disposed on the proximal end of the conduit and configured to couple the tracheal tube to an auxiliary device.

15. A tracheal tube, comprising:

a conduit configured to deliver gas to a patient's airway;

an inflatable cuff coupled to an exterior wall of the conduit and comprising a proximal shoulder and a distal shoulder;

a suction lumen formed between the exterior wall and an inner wall of the conduit and having a first inner diameter comprising a widest diameter across a circumferential cross-section of the suction lumen; and

an ovoid opening having an outer perimeter positioned in an outermost portion of the exterior wall of the conduit and fluidly coupled to the suction lumen, wherein the ovoid opening comprises a second inner diameter forming part of an outer circumference of the conduit across a widest point of the ovoid opening, wherein the second inner diameter is greater than the first inner diameter of the suction lumen, and wherein a cross-sectional area of the ovoid opening including the second inner diameter is equal to a cross-sectional area of the suction lumen.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the opening comprises a third inner diameter positioned orthogonal to the second inner diameter, and wherein the second inner diameter is greater than the third inner diameter.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first inner diameter is approximately 5 millimeters of less.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second inner diameter of the opening is less than approximately 50% of a circumference of the suction lumen.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first inner diameter is greater than the third inner diameter.
