Abstract

A surgical retrieval apparatus includes an elongate tubular member having a drive rod slidably disposed therein. A support member is operably coupled to a distal end of the drive rod. A pouch is attached to the support member and has a closed end and an open end. The pouch may be releasably coupled to the support member. An end effector is repositionable with respect to a longitudinal axis of the tubular member. The support member may include an expandable member.

Claims (24)

1. A surgical retrieval apparatus, comprising:

an elongate tubular member defining a bore and a first longitudinal axis, the elongate member having a distal end and a proximal end;

an end effector defining a second longitudinal axis and having a tubular configuration pivotally coupled to the distal end of the elongated tubular member, the end effector having a proximal end and a distal end and being repositionable between a first position in which the second longitudinal axis is aligned with the first longitudinal axis and a second position in which the second longitudinal axis defines an acute angle with respect to the first longitudinal axis;

an articulation assembly including a control arm having a distal end pivotally connected to the end effector, the control arm being movable to move the end effector between the first position and the second position;

a support member movably supported within the end effector, the support member being movable between a retracted position located at least partially within the end effector and a distal position extending from the distal end of the end effector; and

a pouch attached to the support member, the pouch being positioned within the end effector when the support member is in the retracted position;

wherein the elongate tubular member defines a passageway extending from the distal end of the elongate tubular member to a handle secured to the elongate tubular member, the control arm extending through and being movable within the passageway to move the end effector between the first and second positions.

2. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , further including a drive member slidably disposed within the bore of the elongate tubular member, the drive member being movable within the bore to move the support member between the retracted and distal positions.

3. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the support member is secured to the distal end of the drive member, the support member having a circular hoop configuration in an unstressed condition.

4. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the support member includes two resilient support portions that define the circular hoop configuration.

5. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the support member includes an expandable member formed from an expandable foam.

6. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pouch has a first end and a closed second end, the first end being transitionable between an open configuration and a closed configuration.

7. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the handle includes a switch coupled to the control arm, the switch being movable to move the control arm to reposition the end effector between the first and second positions.

8. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the support member is rotatable about the first longitudinal axis.

9. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , further including a drawstring positioned about the first end of the pouch, the drawstring being movable to transition the first end of the pouch from the open configuration to the closed configuration.

10. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the elongate tubular member includes a pair of opposing fingers, the proximal end of the end effector being pivotally coupled to the distal end of the elongate tubular member between the pair of opposing fingers.

The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 10 , wherein each of the fingers include an inwardly extending button and the end effector defines spaced openings, wherein each of the buttons is received in a respective one of the spaced openings to pivotally secure the end effector to the elongate tubular member.

12. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pouch is removably supported on the support member.

13. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the support member includes an expandable member having a chamber, the expandable member transitioning from a first condition to a second condition upon introduction of a fluid to the chamber.

14. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , further including a tube coupled to a source of irrigation fluid.

15. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 1 , further including an extension tube coupled to a source of vacuum.

16. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 2 , further including socket formed at the distal end of the elongate tubular member and a ball attached to the proximal end of the end effector, the ball being rotatably received within the socket.

17. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the ball defines a channel configured to receive the drive member.

18. The surgical retrieval apparatus of claim 17 , wherein control arm is attached to the ball such that movement of the control arm effects rotation of the ball within the socket.
