Abstract

A connection system is disclosed for use in providing a high speed transmission line for connecting a chip mounted on a circuit board to a connector. The system has a structure that allows for high data rates from the connector to the chip. The connector includes a plurality of conductive terminals and a ground terminal arranged so that the impedance and other electrical characteristics may be maintained from the connector to the chip while reducing signal loss.

Claims (11)

1. A connection system comprising:

a first chip supported on a first circuit board;

a second chip supported on a second circuit board;

a cable assembly including a first body formed of an insulative material and positioned adjacent the first chip, the cable assembly including a plurality of cables with ends supported by the first body, each of the cables in the plurality of cables having a pair of signal conductors and the first body supporting a plurality of first terminals that are used to terminate the pairs of signal conductors, each of the first terminals including a tail that is connected to the corresponding circuit board so as to provide electrical communication with the first chip, the first terminals forming first pairs;

a first connector supporting a plurality of second terminals, the second terminals including tails and contacts, the tails of the second terminals connected the pairs of signal conductors and being arranged so as to form second pairs of second terminals, wherein the terminals that form the second pairs are positioned adjacent each other; and

a second connector supporting a plurality of third terminals, the third terminals including tails and contacts, the third terminals being arranged in pairs that correspond to the pairs of second terminals, the third terminals being in electrical connection with the second chip, wherein the second terminals are in electrical communication with the third terminals.

2. The connection system of claim 1 , wherein the second connector includes cables that provide an electrical communication path between the third terminals and the second chip.

3. The connection system of claim 1 , wherein the body supports at plurality of first ground terminals, each first ground terminal associated with a pair of the first terminals, and the first connector supports a plurality of second ground terminals, each of the second ground terminals associated with one of the pairs of second terminals, the first and second grounds terminals in electrical communication via the cable.

4. The connection system of claim 3 , wherein each of the cables of the cable assembly includes a conductive shield.

5. The connection system of claim 3 , wherein each of the cables of the cable assembly includes a drain wire.

6. The connection system of claim 1 , wherein the cable assembly is a first cable assembly, the system further comprising a second cable assembly that connects the second connector to the second chip, wherein the tails of the third terminals are terminated to signal conductors provided by the second cable assembly.
