Abstract

A communication device having a controller transmits to a communication system a PKI certificate. Encrypted communications may commence responsive to receiving a public key. The communication system can have a plurality of network elements that integrate operations of a circuit-switched communication network and a packet-switched communication network.

Claims (37)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a server, a registration message from a communications device, the registration message requesting an authentication for an access to a communications network and specifying an authentication certificate associated with the communications device;

determining, by the server, a previous registration of the communications device to the communications network that was previously conducted using the authentication certificate;

determining, by the server, that the communications device is pre-registered for the access to the communications network in response to the previous registration to the communications network;

in response to the determining that the communications device is pre-registered, retrieving, by the server, a public key used for the previous registration of the communications device; and

encrypting, by the server, communications to the communications device using the public key used for the previous registration.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising periodically conducting a reregistration associated with the communications device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving an identifier associated with the communications device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a unique identifier associated with the communications device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating the authentication certificate to a subscriber.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating an address to a subscriber.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising decrypting the communications.

8. A system, comprising:

a hardware processor; and

a memory device, the memory device storing instructions, the instructions when executed causing the hardware processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving a registration message sent from a communications device, the registration message requesting an authentication for an access to a communications network and specifying an authentication certificate associated with the communications device;

determining a previous registration was previously conducted by the communications device using the authentication certificate;

determining that the communications device is pre-registered for the access to the communications network in response to the previous registration that was previously conducted;

retrieving a public key used for the previous registration by the communications device; and

encrypting communications sent to the communications device using the public key used for the previous registration.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise periodically conducting a reregistration associated with the communications device.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving an identifier associated with the communications device.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving a unique identifier associated with the communications device.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise associating the authentication certificate to a subscriber.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise associating an address to a subscriber.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise decrypting the encrypted communications.

15. A memory device storing instructions that when executed cause a hardware processor to execute operations, the operations comprising:

receiving a registration message sent from a communications device, the registration message requesting an authentication for an access to a communications network and specifying an authentication certificate associated with the communications device;

determining a previous registration was previously conducted by the communications device using the authentication certificate;

determining that the communications device is pre-registered for the access to the communications network in response to the previous registration that was previously conducted;

retrieving a public key used for the previous registration by the communications device; and

encrypting communications sent to the communications device using the public key used for the previous registration.

16. The memory device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise periodically conducting a reregistration associated with the communications device.

17. The memory device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving an identifier associated with the communications device.

18. The memory device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving a unique identifier associated with the communications device.

19. The memory device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise associating the authentication certificate to a subscriber.

20. The memory device of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise associating an address to a subscriber.
