CONDOM HAVING A RAISED CONTOURED SURFACE AND METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING
Condoms, condom formers, and methods for forming condoms are disclosed. A condom includes an open end, a closed end, a tubular sheath extending from the open end to the closed end, a tip portion adapted to cover a glans of a penis, disposed adjacent to the closed end, and a plurality of raised features disposed on the tubular sheath, having a top surface area and a base surface area, wherein the total raised top surface area is greater than the total base surface area of the condom.
1 . A method for forming a condom, comprising:
disposing a first elastomeric layer on a former having a plurality of depressions to form a tubular sheath having corresponding plurality of raised features formed by the plurality of depressions;
curing the first elastomeric layer to form a cured first elastomeric layer; and
coating the first elastomeric layer with a second elastomeric layer, wherein the second elastomeric layer has a different color than the first elastomeric layer, and wherein the difference in color between the first elastomeric layer and second elastomeric layer imparts a color contrast to the plurality of raised features relative to a base surface of the condom disposed between plurality of raised features.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein prior to disposing the first elastomeric layer, the former is dipped into a coagulant bath.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first elastomeric layer is formed by dipping the former into a first dip tank have a first latex emulsion.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the second elastomeric layer is formed by dipping the former having the first elastomeric layer formed thereon into a second dip tank have a second latex emulsion.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the first latex emulsion is a lighter color than the second latex emulsion.
6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the first latex emulsion is a darker color than the second latex emulsion.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of features are disposed on at least one of a tip segment, or a bottom portion of the former, the plurality of features forming a snakeskin pattern parallel or perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the former.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of depressions are diamond-shaped.
9 . The method of claim 8 wherein the plurality of depressions range in size from 1.0×1.0 mm to 14.0×14.0 mm.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of depressions are arranged in a pattern parallel with the longitudinal axis of the former.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the pattern is arranged in a pattern lateral to the longitudinal axis of the former.
12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the pattern is a snakeskin pattern.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein a depth of the plurality of depressions range from 0.05 to 1.5 mm.
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the middle portion comprises a plurality of sections.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of sections further includes sections having no pattern.
16 . The method of claim 8 , wherein at least some of the plurality of diamond-shaped raised features are of different height.
17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein a color of the plurality of diamond-shaped raised features having a greater height is darker.
18 . The method of claim 8 , wherein at least some of the plurality of diamond-shaped raised features are of at least one of a different height, a different size, a different shape or a different texture.
