Abstract

A bioreactor outlet air conditioning system ( 10 ) has a bioreactor vessel ( 100 ) and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger has a fluid flow path ( 196 ) from a headspace ( 108 ) in the vessel for venting air from the vessel, and a temperature control element ( 300 ) in thermal contact with the fluid flow path ( 196 ). The fluid flow path ( 196 ) may be defined by a disposable portion of the bioreactor vessel ( 100 ). A method of controlling evaporation within a bioreactor vessel ( 100 ), dependent on the required evaporation rate, adjusts the temperature of the temperature control element ( 300 ) to control the rate of evaporation of the liquid media ( 106 ) from the vessel ( 100 ), and may include monitoring fluids in the fluid flow path ( 196 ) to detect at least water content of the fluids exiting the vessel to adjust the temperature and control the rate of evaporation dependent on the detected water content levels.

Claims (20)

1. A bioreactor, comprising:

a disposable bioreactor vessel comprising a vessel body and a lid having a plane and an integral outlet fluid flow path that is integral with and oriented in the same plane as the lid, the integral outlet fluid flow path comprising a conduit enclosed in the lid that has a first end in fluid communication with a chamber of the vessel body and a second end connected to an outlet line connected to the lid to pass evaporated outlet fluid from the chamber, the lid further comprising a port which defines a through hole in the lid;

a groove that shares a boundary wall with the conduit such that heat transfers between the conduit and the groove via the boundary wall, the groove being disposed in an upper surface of the lid; and

a pH electrode sensor probe, in use the pH electrode sensor probe being received in the port such that an end of the pH electrode sensor probe extends into the vessel body,

wherein, in use, said end of the pH electrode sensor probe is hydrated by a cell culture media in the vessel body, for monitoring pH level of the cell culture media.

2. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , wherein the conduit of the integral outlet fluid flow path is arranged to be at least one of circumferential or serpentine along the same plane as the lid.

3. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , the lid comprising one or more further ports, each further port defining a through hole in the lid for attaching in position an item of equipment for use with the cell culture media contained in the vessel body when in use, the lid thereby closing the vessel and securing in position the items of equipment.

4. The bioreactor according to claim 3 , wherein the lid is removably attachable to the vessel body.

5. The bioreactor according to claim 3 , wherein the items of equipment comprise one or more of:

a gas input line;

a stirrer;

a fluid outlet line; and

a sealing cap.

6. The bioreactor according to claim 3 , wherein in use the respective through holes of the one or more ports attach all of: the pH electrode sensor probe; a gas input line; a stirrer shaft; a fluid outlet line; and a sealing cap.

7. The bioreactor according to claim 3 , wherein the through hole of each port of the one or more further ports differs in size.

8. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , wherein the bioreactor vessel and/or lid is of thermoplastics construction.

9. The bioreactor according to claim 8 , wherein the thermoplastics construction is selected from the group consisting of polystyrene and polycarbonate.

10. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , wherein the groove and the conduit have corresponding shape profiles that maximize heat transfer between the conduit and the groove via the boundary wall.

11. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , wherein the lid further comprises a skirt configured to overlap a lip on the vessel body to secure the lid to the vessel body.

12. The bioreactor according to claim 1 , wherein the pH electrode sensor probe is disposable.
