Abstract

The present invention is intended to permit both real-time display of a picture represented by a non-compressed video signal on a television and display of a picture represented by a compressed video signal at any desired time by simultaneously transmitting the compressed video signal and non-compressed video signal via one interface. An STB packetizes a compressed video signal, and multiplexes the compressed video signal and a blanking signal combined with a non-compressed video signal. Thus, both the video signals are transmitted simultaneously. A picture represented by the non-compressed video signal is displayed on a television in real time. The compressed video signal is stored in a storage medium incorporated in the television, read at any user's desired time, and decoded so that a picture represented by the compressed video signal can be viewed at the user's desired time.

Claims (33)

1. A display device, comprising:

an interface configured to input information from a source device and to send information to the source device, the interface having a plurality of lines;

a tuner unit configured to receive video information transmitted via digital broadcast; and

a display unit configured to display a video based on video information input to the interface or a video based on video information received by the tuner unit,

wherein the display unit is capable of conducting:

a first display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the first display operation the video information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines of the interface, and the clock information is input via a different line among the plurality of the lines of the interface than the at least one line;

a second display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the second display operation the clock information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines of the interface that is the same line that the video information is input; and

a third display operation for displaying a video, based on video information received by the tuner unit,

wherein information indicating that the second display operation is available on the display device is transmitted via the interface to a source device.

2. The display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first display operation is conducted based on reference clock information of the clock information inputted via the different line; and

wherein the second display operation is conducted based on reference clock information of the clock information inputted via the at least one line.

3. A display device, comprising:

an interface configured to input information from a source device and to send information to the source device, the interface having a plurality of lines; and

a video unit configured to display a video based on video information inputted to the interface;

wherein the video unit is capable of conducting:

a first display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the first display operation the video information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines of the interface, and the clock information is inputted via a different line among the plurality of the lines of the interface than the at least one line; and

a second display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the second display operation the clock information is input via at least one line of the plurality of lines of the interface that is the same line that the video information is input,

wherein information indicating that the second display operation is available on the display device is transmitted via the interface to a source device.

4. A display device comprising:

an interface configured to input information from a source device and to send information to the source device, the interface having a plurality of lines;

a tuner unit configured to receive video information transmitted via digital broadcast; and

a display unit configured to display a video based on video information inputted to the interface or a video based on video information received by the tuner unit,

wherein the display unit is capable of conducting:

a first display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the first display operation the video information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines, and the clock information is input via a different line among the plurality of the lines of the interface than the at least one line;

a second display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the second display operation the clock information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines of the interface that is the same line that the video information is input; and

a third display operation for displaying a video, based on video information received by the tuner unit.

5. A display device, comprising:

an interface configured to input information from a source device and to send information to the source device, the interface having a plurality of lines; and

a video unit configured to display a video based on video information inputted to the interface;

wherein the video unit is capable of conducting:

a first display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the first display operation the video information is input via at least one line of the plurality of the lines, and the clock information is input via a different line among the plurality of the lines of the interface from the at least one line; and

a second display operation for displaying a video, based on video information and clock information, wherein in the second display operation the clock information is input via at least one line of the plurality of lines of the interface that is the same line that the video information is input.
