Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method and system for detecting, monitoring and/or controlling one or more of mobile services for a mobile communication device (also referred to herein as a Controllable Mobile Device or CMD), and in particular, when the device is being used and the vehicle, operated by the user of the device, is moving. The present method and system determines whether the vehicle is being operated by a user that may also have access to a mobile communication device which, if used concurrently while the vehicle is in operation, may lead to unsafe operation of the vehicle. If the mobile services control system determines that a vehicle operator has potentially unsafe access to a mobile communication device, the mobile services control system may restrict operator access to one or more services that would otherwise be available to the operator via the mobile communication device.

Claims (42)

1. A mobile services control system configured to determine whether a vehicle is being driven by one or more vehicle operators with the vehicle, comprising:

4. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment comprises a data management system configured to store information.

5. The mobile services control system of claim 4 , wherein the data management system is operated independently of a wireless service provider and a wireless network.

6. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a network interface configured to communicate with a service provider the identity of the vehicle operator.

7. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment resides on the one or more controllable mobile devices.

8. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment resides on the in-vehicle detection system.

9. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment resides on a service provider network.

10. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment resides on a wireless network.

11. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle operation detector receives information indicative of one or more of vehicle key on, vehicle key off, and vehicle movement.

12. The mobile services control system of claim 11 , wherein the context of the one or more controllable mobile devices comprises one or more of: i.) a velocity of the one or more controllable mobile devices, ii.) a time of the velocity of the one or more controllable mobile devices, iii.) an acceleration of the one or more controllable mobile devices, iv.) a time of the acceleration of the one or more controllable mobile devices, v.) a direction of the one or more controllable mobile devices, and vi.) movement of the one or more controllable devices indicative of motion.

13. The mobile services control system of claim 11 , wherein the context of the in-vehicle detection system comprises one or more of: i.) a velocity of vehicle, ii.) a time of the velocity of the vehicle, iii.) an acceleration of the vehicle, iv.) a time of the acceleration of the vehicle, v.) a direction of the vehicle, and vi.) movement of the vehicle indicative of motion.

14. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the information indicative of vehicle movement comprises information indicative of one or more of a vehicle acceleration, a vehicle velocity, and a vehicle vibration.

15. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment communicates with a wireless service provider for the one or more mobile communication devices for notifying the service provider to restrict access to one or more services provided by the one or more mobile communication devices and the one more mobile communication devices restricts access to the one or more services.

16. The mobile services control system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more services comprises one or more of a text message, e-mail message, streaming media, phone operation, alert message, and a notification message.

17. The mobile services control system of claim 1 , wherein the computational equipment communicates with a wireless service provider for the one or more mobile communication devices for notifying the service provider to restrict access to one or more services provided by the one or more mobile communication devices and the service provider restricts access to the one or more services.

18. The mobile services control system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more services comprises one or more of a text message, e-mail message, streaming media, phone operation, alert message, and a notification message.

19. A mobile services control system configured to determine whether a vehicle is being driven by one or more vehicle operators, comprising:

an in-vehicle detection system configured to detect one or more controllable mobile devices registered with the vehicle, the in-vehicle detection system, comprising:

(a) one or more detectors for wirelessly detecting a location of the one or more controllable mobile devices registered with the vehicle and associated with the vehicle;
