Abstract

A capacitor provides a plurality of selectable capacitance values, by selective connection of six capacitor sections of a capacitive element each having a capacitance value. The capacitor sections are provided in a plurality of wound cylindrical capacitive elements. Two vertically stacked wound cylindrical capacitance elements may each provide three capacitor sections. There may be six separately wound cylindrical capacitive elements each providing a capacitor section. The capacitor sections have a common element terminal.

Claims (17)

1. An apparatus suitable for use with a fan motor and a compressor motor in an air-conditioning system and configured to provide a plurality of selectable capacitance values, comprising:

six capacitive devices housed in a case, wherein each capacitive device independently provides at least one capacitance value between about 2.5 and 25.0 microfarads, and each capacitive device has a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal;

a cover assembly comprising:

a deformable cover mountable to the case,

six capacitor cover terminals, each capacitor cover terminal corresponding to one of the capacitive devices and each capacitor cover terminal having at least one contact extending from the deformable cover, wherein the deformable cover is configured to displace at least one of the six capacitor cover terminals upon an operative failure of at least one of the six capacitive devices, and

six insulation structures, wherein each insulation structure is configured to provide insulation for at least one of the six capacitor cover terminals; and

six conductors, wherein each conductor is configured to electrically connect one of the six capacitor cover terminals to a corresponding one of the six capacitive devices,

wherein at least one of the six capacitive devices is connected to the fan motor during operation of the air-conditioning system and wherein at least another of the six capacitive devices is connected to the compressor motor during operation of the air-conditioning system.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , each of the six capacitive devices being provided by a section of a wound capacitive element.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , each of the six capacitive devices being separately wound.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the combined capacitance value of the six capacitive devices is greater than about 55.0 microfarads.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the combined capacitance value of the six capacitive devices is greater than about 65.0 microfarads.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein four of the capacitive devices have a combined capacitance value greater than about 55.0 microfarads and the remainder of the capacitive devices have a combined capacitance value greater than about 6.0 microfarads.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein selective connections of the capacitor cover terminals provide at least two hundred operable capacitance values.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the insulation structures is cup shaped.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each capacitor cover terminal includes less than four blades.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the insulation structures includes an insulator cup.
