Abstract

Transmission of baseband and carrier-modulated vector codewords, using a plurality of encoders, each encoder configured to receive information bits and to generate a set of baseband-encoded symbols representing a vector codeword; one or more modulation circuits, each modulation circuit configured to operate on a corresponding set of baseband-encoded symbols, and using a respective unique carrier frequency, to generate a set of carrier-modulated encoded symbols; and, a summation circuit configured to generate a set of wire-specific outputs, each wire-specific output representing a sum of respective symbols of the carrier-modulated encoded symbols and at least one set of baseband-encoded symbols.

one or more modulation circuits, each modulation circuit configured to operate on a corresponding set of baseband-encoded symbols, and using a respective unique carrier frequency, to generate a set of carrier-modulated encoded symbols, each modulation circuit having a respective modulator configured to modulate a corresponding baseband-encoded symbol to generate a corresponding carrier-modulated encoded symbol for transmission over a respective wire of the multiple wires; and,

a summation circuit configured to generate a set of wire-specific outputs, each wire-specific output representing a sum of a respective symbol of the baseband-encoded symbols and a respective symbol of at least one set of carrier-modulated symbols, the summation circuit configured to provide the wire-specific outputs for transmission over the multiple wires.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each encoder of the plurality of encoders comprises a partial response encoder configured to generate partial-response baseband-encoded symbols.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the partial response encoder is selected from the group consisting of a duobinary partial response encoder, modified duobinary partial response encoder, dicode partial response encoder, Class 2 partial response encoder, and Hamming filter partial response encoder.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the partial response encoder is configured to generate a symbol-wise weighted summation of a plurality of Ensemble Non-Return-to-Zero (ENRZ) vector codewords.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of Ensemble Non-Return-to-Zero (ENRZ) vector codewords comprises a consecutive pair of ENRZ codewords.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of encoders comprises a plurality of Ensemble Non-Return-to-Zero (ENRZ) encoders that generate ENRZ vector codewords.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein each ENRZ codeword represents a sum of sub-channel code vectors wherein a weighting of each sub-channel code vector is based on a corresponding antipodal weight determined by a corresponding information bit in the received information bits.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an error correction encoder configured to provide a portion of the received information bits, the portion of the received information bits having increased redundancy.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the portion of the received information bits provided by the error correction encoder comprises increased redundancy through bit repetition.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the error correction encoder comprises a forward error correction encoding to generate the portion of the information bits.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the forward error correction is a [7,4,3] Hamming code.

12. A method comprising

receiving information bits and responsively generating at least two sets of baseband symbols, each set of baseband symbols representing a corresponding baseband vector codeword for transmission over a plurality of wires, wherein a number of wires corresponds to a number of symbols in each set of baseband symbols;

generating at least one carrier-modulated codeword by modulating at least one set of baseband symbols with at least one carrier, wherein each symbol in the at least one set of baseband symbols is modulated using a respective modulator; and,

transmitting, in parallel over the plurality of wires, a codeword superposition signal representing a sum of a baseband codeword and at least one carrier-modulated codeword.
