Abstract

Methods of inhibiting bacterial virulence in a subject are provided. The methods can include administering an effective amount of a formulation to inhibit a bacterial virulence in a subject, the formulation having a water soluble tannin combined with hydrogen peroxide in a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient; wherein, the tannin has a molecular weight ranging from about 170 Daltons to about 4000 Daltons; the tannin:peroxide weight ratio ranges from about 1:1000 to about 10:1; and, the composition inhibits a bacterial virulence in the subject when compared to a second subject in a control group in which the composition was not administered.

Claims (53)

1. A method of inhibiting gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in a subject, the method comprising:

administering an effective amount of a formulation to inhibit a bacterial virulence in the subject, the formulation having a water soluble tannin combined with hydrogen peroxide in a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient;

wherein,

the tannin has a molecular weight ranging from about 170 Daltons to about 4000 Daltons;

the tannin:peroxide weight ratio ranges from about 1:1000 to about 10:1; and,

the composition inhibits gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in the subject when compared to a second subject in a control group in which the composition was not administered.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a hydrolysable tannin.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a water soluble condensed tannin.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a mixture of a hydrolysable tannin and a water soluble condensed tannin.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a flavanol.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a catechin.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is gallic acid, epigallic acid, or a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a gallotannin.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is an ellagitannin.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a punicalagin.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is combined with the hydrogen peroxide as a component of a water extract of a plant tissue.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is combined with the hydrogen peroxide as a component of an alcohol extract of a plant tissue.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the hydrolysable tannin is a product of a water extraction of Chinese gall.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tannin is a hydrolysable tannin having from 3-12 galloyl residues.

15. A method of inhibiting gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in a subject, comprising:

administering an effective amount of a composition to a subject to inhibit a bacterial virulence; the formulation produced from a process including

combining a water soluble tannin with hydrogen peroxide at a tannin:peroxide weight ratio that ranges from about 1:1000 to about 10:1, the tannin having a molecular weight ranging from about 170 Daltons to about 4000 Daltons;

removing free hydrogen peroxide from the combination; and, mixing the combination of the tannin and the hydrogen peroxide with a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient to create the formulation;

wherein,

the administering includes selecting a desired concentration of the formulation for the administering; and,

the composition inhibits gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in the subject when compared to a second subject in a control group in which the composition was not administered.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a hydrolysable tannin.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a water soluble condensed tannin.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a mixture of a hydrolysable tannin and a water soluble condensed tannin.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a flavanol.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a catechin.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is gallic acid, epigallic acid, or a combination thereof.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a gallotannin.

23. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is an ellagitannin.

24. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is a punicalagin.

25. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is combined with the hydrogen peroxide as a component of a water extract of a plant tissue.

26. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tannin is combined with the hydrogen peroxide as a component of an alcohol extract of a plant tissue.

27. A method of inhibiting gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in a subject, the method comprising:

administering an effective amount of a composition to a subject to inhibit a bacterial virulence in the subject, the composition having a water soluble polyphenol that was (i) water-extracted from pomegranate husk and green tea leaf and (ii) combined with hydrogen peroxide prior to the administering;

wherein, the hydrogen peroxide concentration ranges from about 0.001% to about 2.0% based on total dry weight of the composition;

the polyphenol comprises a tannin;

the polyphenol has a molecular weight ranging from about 170 Daltons to about 4000 Daltons; and,

the composition inhibits gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in the subject when compared to a second subject in a control group in which the composition was not administered.

28. A method of inhibiting gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in a subject, comprising:

administering an effective amount of a composition to inhibit a bacterial virulence in the subject,

the composition produced from a process including extracting a water soluble polyphenol from a combination of green tea leaf and pomegranate husk;

combining the polyphenol with hydrogen peroxide prior to the administering;

wherein, the polyphenol has a molecular weight ranging from about 170 Daltons to about 4000 Daltons;

selecting a desired concentration for the composition; and,

diluting the composition to the desired concentration for the administering;

wherein, the hydrogen peroxide concentration ranges from about 0.001% to about 2.0% based on total dry weight of the composition;

the polyphenol comprises a tannin; and,

the composition inhibits gastrointestinal spasm associated with a bacterial virulence in the subject when compared to a second subject in a control group in which the composition was not administered.
