Abstract

An integrated adhesive sensor array includes an adhesive a patch, a sensor hub, and a detachable sensor pod packaged as a unit. The patch may include a docking area for the detachable sensor pod. The detachable sensor pod may include at least one sensor and may be configured to be detached from the patch and applied to various locations on a body. The detachable sensor pod may send sensor data to the sensor hub via a wired link when on the patch and via a wireless link when detached from the patch. The sensor hub receives sensor data from the various sensors, and relays the data to a receiver. The sensor hub and detachable sensor pod may include indicators for communicating information. The sensor hub may include a power source for powering the sensor hub and a detachable sensor pod attached to the main sensor unit or patch.

Claims (48)

the patch comprises:

sensor hub wiring electrically coupled to the sensor hub;

a flexible layer mechanically coupled to the sensor hub and the sensor hub wiring; and

a docking area configured to receive the detachable sensor pod when the detachable sensor pod is mechanically coupled to the patch, the docking area including a connector electrically coupled to the sensor hub wiring, the connector configured to electrically couple the detachable sensor pod to the sensor hub when the detachable sensor pod is mechanically coupled to the patch;

the sensor hub is coupled with a first sensor and comprises:

one or more wireless transceivers;

a first energy storage element; and

a controller coupled to the one or more wireless transceivers, the first sensor, the sensor hub wiring, and the first energy storage element, wherein the controller is configured to perform operations comprising wirelessly communicating, via the one or more wireless transceivers, with a receiver external to the integrated sensor array and wirelessly communicating, via the one or more wireless transceivers, with the detachable sensor pod; and

the detachable sensor pod comprises:

a second sensor;

a second energy storage element; and

a wireless transmitter coupled to the second sensor and the second energy storage element, wherein the detachable sensor pod is configured to:

be powered by the first energy storage element of the sensor hub, via the connector, when the detachable sensor pod is mechanically coupled to the patch; and

wirelessly communicate, via the wireless transmitter, sensor readings obtained via the second sensor to the sensor hub when the detachable sensor pod is not mechanically coupled to the patch.

2. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor hub further comprises a first indicator coupled to the controller, the first indicator configured to generate a first stimulus; and

the controller is configured to induce the first indicator to generate the first stimulus in response to the sensor hub wirelessly communicating with the receiver.

3. The integrated sensor array of claim 2 , wherein the first indicator is configured to generate a second stimulus; and

the controller is configured to induce the first indicator to generate the second stimulus in response to the controller determining proper placement of the detachable sensor pod on a body when the detachable sensor pod is not mechanically coupled to the docking area.

4. The integrated sensor array of claim 3 , wherein the first indicator is configured to generate a third stimulus; and

the controller is configured to induce the first indicator to generate the third stimulus in response to the controller determining improper placement of the detachable sensor pod on the body when the detachable sensor pod is not mechanically coupled to the docking area.

5. The integrated sensor array of claim 4 , wherein the second stimulus is generating a green display and the third stimulus is generating a red display.

6. The integrated sensor array of claim 3 , wherein determining proper placement of the detachable sensor pod on a body when the detachable sensor pod is not mechanically coupled to the docking area the detachable sensor pod includes comparing a signal from the second sensor of the detachable sensor pod to a threshold value of an acceptable sensor signal of the second sensor and the second stimulus is generated in response to determining, based on the comparing, that the signal from the second sensor satisfies the threshold value.

7. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the docking area is disposed on a protrusion of the patch and the flexible layer is configured to enable the integrated sensor array to be affixed to a surface having an irregular contour.

8. The integrated sensor array of claim 7 , wherein the protrusion is further configured to distribute a force generated by removing the detachable sensor pod from the docking area to resist tearing of the patch.

9. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the detachable sensor pod further comprises a second indicator, the second indicator configured to generate a fourth stimulus and the detachable sensor pod is configured to induce the second indicator to generate the fourth stimulus in response to the detachable sensor pod determining proper placement of the detachable sensor pod on a body by:

determining a current location of the detachable sensor pod with respect to the body;

comparing the current location of the detachable sensor pod with respect to the body to a proper placement location for the detachable sensor pod; and

inducing the second indicator to generate the fourth stimulus based on determining that the current location of the detachable sensor pod corresponds to the proper placement location for the detachable sensor pod.

10. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor coupled to the sensor hub is a satellite positioning system receiver configured to determine a geographic location of the sensor hub.

11. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor coupled to the sensor hub is configured to determine a geographic location of the sensor hub based on received IEEE 802.11 based signals.

12. The integrated sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor coupled to the sensor hub includes an accelerometer.
