Abstract

A method for generating a control signal from an inaudible acoustic signal comprising modulating the inaudible acoustic signal, wherein the inaudible signal is converted to a modulated inaudible acoustic signal comprising a first frequency comprising 17 kHz over a time duration of 50 ms, a first null over a time duration of 50 ms, a second frequency comprising 18 kHz over a time duration of 100 ms followed by a second null over a time duration of 50 ms, transmitting the modulated inaudible acoustic signal and an audio signal to a signal receiving device, sampling the modulated inaudible acoustic signal at a frequency of 16 kHz, wherein the modulated inaudible acoustic signal is converted to a digitally modulated inaudible acoustic signal, filtering the digitally modulated inaudible acoustic signal to provide an acoustic filter response signal comprising an acoustic null component and an acoustic down-converted component, demodulating the acoustic filter response signal, wherein the acoustic down-converted component is isolated from the acoustic null component, the isolated acoustic down-converted component representing a control signal.

Claims (34)

1. A method for generating a control signal for a hearing assistance device from an inaudible control signal, comprising:

configuring a signal generating device configured to generate an inaudible control signal comprising a first frequency of equal to or greater than 16 kilohertz but less than an Ultra High Frequency (UHF), to modulate said inaudible control signal and transmit said modulated inaudible control signal to a signal receiving device;

configuring the signal receiving device to continuously receive an externally transmitted audio signal and to receive said modulated inaudible control signal from said signal generating device, to process said externally transmitted audio signal while processing said modulated inaudible control signal, and to demodulate said modulated inaudible control signal;

said signal receiving device being further configured to sample said modulated inaudible control signal, wherein said modulated inaudible control signal is converted to a digitally modulated inaudible control signal, and filter said digital modulated inaudible control signal;

configuring said signal generating device to generate a subsequent inaudible control signal comprising a second frequency;

configuring said signal generating device to modulate said subsequent inaudible control signal, said modulating step comprising converting said subsequent first inaudible control signal to a specified modulated inaudible control signal comprising a third frequency of at least 17 kHz over a first fixed duration of time; and

configuring said signal receiving device to process said specified modulated inaudible control signal and a first audio signal received by said signal receiving device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said signal generating device comprises a transmitter.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the transmitter is configured to generate a plurality of time modulated control signals, said plurality of time modulated control signals being generated by generating a plurality of multi-frequency signals comprising a plurality of time modulated frequency combinations, and encoding said plurality of time modulated frequency combinations into a plurality of control signals in a frequency domain, each of said plurality of time modulated frequency combinations comprising a different encoded frequency for its own fixed period of time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said signal receiving device comprises a receiver.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

said signal receiving device configured to filter said digitally modulated inaudible control signal to provide an acoustic filter response signal that includes an acoustic null component and an acoustic down-converted component,

wherein said step of filtering said digital modulated inaudible control signal comprises filtering said digital modulated inaudible control signal with a delta-sigma converter.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

demodulating said acoustic filter response signal to isolate said acoustic down-converted component from said acoustic null component, said isolated acoustic down-converted component representing a first control signal, said first control signal being generated concurrently with receipt of said externally transmitted audio signal.

The method of claim 1 , where the said specified modulated inaudible control signal causes the hearing assistance device to change a level of amplification in the hearing assistance device, where the hearing assistance device is configured to provide positive feedback to a user of the hearing assistance device when a level of amplification is changed, including an increase or a decrease in the level.

The method of claim 1 , where the signal generating device is configured to generate the inaudible control signal at the first frequency between 16 Kilohertz in the audio frequency range to frequencies in the ultrasound frequency range but limited to frequencies that are less than the UHF frequency range.

9. A wireless asymmetrical control system for a hearing assistance device, comprising:

a signal generating device configured to generate an inaudible control signal comprising a first frequency of equal to or greater than 16 kilohertz but less than an Ultra High Frequency (UHF), where the signal generating device also modulates the inaudible control signal and transmits the modulated inaudible control signal to a signal receiving device in the hearing assistance device;

the signal receiving device is configured to continuously receive an externally transmitted audio signal and to receive the modulated inaudible control signal from the signal generating device, where the signal receiving device is configured to process the externally transmitted audio signal while processing the modulated inaudible control signal, and where the signal receiving device is configured to demodulate the modulated inaudible control signal;

where the signal receiving device is further configured to sample the modulated inaudible control signal, wherein the modulated inaudible control signal is converted to a digitally modulated inaudible control signal, and where the signal receiving device is configured to filter the digital modulated inaudible control signal;

where the signal generating device is configured to generate a subsequent inaudible control signal comprising a second frequency;

where the signal generating device is configure to modulate the subsequent inaudible control signal, where the modulating step comprises converting the subsequent inaudible control signal to a specified modulated inaudible control signal comprising a third frequency of at least 17 kHz over a first fixed duration of time; and

where the signal receiving device is configured to process the specified modulated inaudible control signal and a first audio signal received by the signal receiving device.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the signal generating device comprises a transmitter.

The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the transmitter is configured to generate a plurality of time modulated control signals, the plurality of time modulated control signals being generated by generating a plurality of multi-frequency signals comprising a plurality of time modulated frequency combinations, and encoding the plurality of time modulated frequency combinations into a plurality of first control signals in a frequency domain, each of the plurality of time modulated frequency combinations comprising a different encoded frequency for its own fixed period of time.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the signal receiving device comprises a receiver.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising:

the signal receiving device configured to filter the digitally modulated inaudible control signal to provide an acoustic filter response signal that includes an acoustic null component and an acoustic down-converted component,

wherein the step of filtering the digital modulated inaudible control signal comprises filtering the digital modulated inaudible control signal with a delta-sigma converter.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising:

demodulating the acoustic filter response signal to isolate the acoustic down-converted component from the acoustic null component, the isolated acoustic down-converted component representing a first control signal, said first control signal being generated concurrently with receipt of said externally transmitted audio signal.

The apparatus of claim 9 , where the said specified modulated inaudible control signal causes the hearing assistance device to change a level of amplification in the hearing assistance device, where the hearing assistance device is configured to provide positive feedback to a user of the hearing assistance device when a level of amplification is changed, including an increase or a decrease in the level.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , where the signal generating device is configured to generate the inaudible control signal at the first frequency between 16 Kilohertz in the audio frequency range to frequencies in the ultrasound frequency range but limited to frequencies that are less than the UHF frequency range.
