Abstract

A device for vaporizing a hole in tissue, including a vaporizing element, a heating element, configured to heat the vaporizing element, and a mechanism configured to advance the vaporizing element into a specific depth in the tissue and retract the vaporizing element from the tissue within a period of time long enough for the vaporizing element to vaporize the tissue and short enough to limit diffusion of heat beyond a predetermined collateral damage distance from the hole. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

Claims (36)

1. A device for skin treatment comprising:

a heated vaporizing element comprising:

a hollow titanium element with a closed tip; and

a heating element within the hollow titanium element; and

a mechanism configured to advance the heated vaporizing element into live skin and retract the heated vaporizing element from the live skin, said heated vaporizing element configured to produce a hole in the live skin,

wherein the heating element is arranged to be heated to a temperature in a range of 200 to 600 degrees Celsius before said heated vaporizing element is advanced.

2. The device of claim 1 in which an external surface of the heated vaporizing element comprises a biocompatible coating.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising the hollow titanium element being filled with a heating element comprising heat conducting material.

4. The device of claim 1 in which the heating element comprises copper.

5. The device of claim 1 in which the heated vaporizing element is composed entirely of titanium.

6. The device of claim 1 in which the heated vaporizing element comprises a plurality of tips.

7. The device of claim 1 in which the heated vaporizing element comprises a shape with a cross section selected from a group consisting of:

a solid circle;

a solid rectangle;

a hollow circle;

a hollow rectangle;

a straight line;

a curve; and

a wavy line.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the heating element further comprises a component for heating the heating element.

9. The device of claim 8 in which the heating element comprises exothermic chemical reactants.

10. The device of claim 8 in which the component for heating the heating element comprises an electrical resistor.

11. The device of claim 1 in which an inner dimension of the hollow titanium element is in a range of 100-1600 microns.

12. The device of claim 1 in which an outer dimension of the hollow titanium element is in a range of 150-1800 microns.

13. The device of claim 1 in which a wall thickness of the hollow titanium element is in a range of 50-200 microns.

14. The device of claim 1 in which the heating element comprises a material for heating by an exothermic reaction.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the device further comprises a component for heating the heating element which is external to the heating element.

16. The device of claim 15 in which the component for heating the heating element comprises an electrical resistor.

17. The device of claim 1 in which the hollow titanium element with a closed tip is composed entirely of titanium with a closed titanium tip.

18. A method of evaporating skin comprising:

heating a vaporizing element to a temperature in a range of 200 to 600 degrees Celsius;

advancing the heated vaporizing element into live skin and retracting the heated vaporizing element from the live skin, said heated vaporizing element producing a hole in the live skin, the vaporizing element comprising:

a hollow titanium element with a closed tip; and

a heating element within the hollow titanium element;

wherein the advancing the heated vaporizing element is to a depth which is smaller or equal to a papillary dermis depth within the tissue; and

the retracting the heated vaporizing element from the tissue is after a short duration, the short duration being short enough to prevent collateral damage further than 150 microns from the hole vaporized in the live skin.
