Abstract

A joystick assembly for use with a device including a joystick surface and a first magnet having north and south magnetic poles includes a second magnet having north and south magnetic poles and a movable elongated shaft having first and second opposing ends arranged along a major axis of the shaft. The first end of the shaft is coupled to the second magnet such that movement of the shaft results in movement of the second magnet relative to the first magnet such that a line between centers of the north and south magnetic poles of the second magnet is movable relative to a line between the north and south magnetic poles of the first magnet. An attraction of the second magnet to the first magnet results in a restoring force upon the shaft, and the shaft and the second magnet are removable from the joystick surface.

Claims (20)

1. A joystick assembly for use with a device comprising a joystick surface and a first magnet having north and south magnetic poles, comprising:

a second magnet having north and south magnetic poles; and

a movable elongated shaft having first and second opposing ends arranged along a major axis of the shaft, the first end coupled to the second magnet such that movement of the shaft results in movement of the second magnet relative to the first magnet such that a line between centers of the north and south magnetic poles of the second magnet is movable relative to a line between the north and south magnetic poles of the first magnet, wherein an attraction of the second magnet to the first magnet results in a restoring force upon the shaft, and wherein the shaft and the second magnet are removable from the joystick surface.

The joystick assembly of claim 1 , wherein the device further comprises a magnetic field sensor disposed between the joystick surface and the second magnet, the magnetic field sensor comprising a plurality of magnetic field sensing elements supported by a substrate and configured to generate a respective plurality of magnetic field signals and to detect a position of the second magnet relative to the first magnet.

3. The joystick assembly of claim 1 , wherein the device further comprises a device housing having at least two couplable portions, wherein at least one of the couplable portions includes the joystick surface.

4. The joystick assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second magnet is a substantially spherical magnet, and the first end of the shaft comprises a cavity in which the second magnet is retained.

5. The joystick assembly of claim 4 , wherein the second magnet is removable from the shaft upon application of a predetermined force.

6. The joystick assembly of claim 5 , wherein the second magnet and the shaft take the form of a ball and socket type assembly.

7. The joystick assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a handle coupled to the second end of the movable elongated shaft.

8. The joystick assembly of claim 7 , wherein the movable elongated shaft comprises a first elongated shaft and the handle takes the form of a second elongated shaft having first and second opposing ends arranged along a major axis of the second elongated shaft.

9. The joystick assembly of claim 8 , wherein a portion between the first and second ends of the second elongated shaft is coupled to the second end of the movable elongated shaft.

10. The joystick assembly of claim 7 , wherein the handle is fixedly coupled to the movable elongated shaft.

11. The joystick assembly of claim 7 , wherein the movable elongated shaft and the handle form a substantially T-shaped assembly.

12. The joystick assembly of claim 7 , wherein the movable elongated shaft and the handle form a substantially L-shaped assembly.

13. The joystick assembly of claim 7 , wherein the handle is foldable with respect to the movable elongated shaft.

14. The joystick assembly of claim 13 , further comprising a hinge coupled between the handle and the movable elongated shaft, the hinge resulting in the handle being pivotable about at least one axis with respect to the movable elongated shaft.

15. The joystick assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a motion restriction element configured to restrict an excursion of the second magnet with respect to the joystick surface to a predetermined excursion.

16. The joystick assembly of claim 15 , wherein the motion restriction element is coupled to the movable elongated shaft proximate to the first end of the shaft.

17. The joystick assembly of claim 15 , wherein the motion restriction element is disposed on the joystick surface.

18. The joystick assembly of claim 1 , wherein the device is at least one of a smartphone, a tablet computer, and instrumentation console, a video game console, a video game controller, a keyboard, and a laptop computer.
