Abstract

A system for electrically stimulating and/or detecting bioelectrical signals of a user comprising: an array of permeable bodies configured to absorb a solution that facilitates electrical coupling with a body region of the user; a housing defining an array of protrusions conforming to the body region and comprising: an array of channels distributed across the array of protrusions, each channel at least partially surrounding a permeable body, configured to deliver the solution to the permeable body, and comprising a barrier that prevents passage of the permeable body past the barrier, and a manifold configured to distribute the solution to the array of channels; and a coupling subsystem comprising a first electrical coupling region in electrical communication with an interior of the manifold, wherein the first electrical coupling region is configured to couple to a second electrical coupling region that couples the first electrical coupling region to the electronics subsystem.

Claims (34)

1. A system for electrically stimulating a user, the system comprising:

an electrode assembly comprising:

a housing having an array of openings at a broad surface of the electrode assembly and providing an array of permeable bodies configured to conform to a head region of the user, each of the array of permeable bodies comprising:

an array of conductive polymer cores associated with the array of openings;

a fluid-absorbing material at least partially surrounding each of the array of conductive polymer cores, wherein, during use, the fluid-absorbing material absorbs a solution that facilitates electrical coupling between the system and the head region of the user;

a headband positioning unit, configured to span the head region of the user in a left-right direction, comprising:

an electronics subsystem, housed within the headband positioning unit, comprising a power module and providing current for stimulating to the user by way of the array of permeable bodies of the electrode assembly; and

an electromechanical coupler that reversibly couples the electrode assembly to the electronics subsystem and the headband positioning unit, such that the electrode assembly is removable from the headband positioning unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an array of protrusions in communication with the array of permeable bodies, wherein the array of protrusions electrically connects the array of permeable bodies to the electromechanical coupler.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein at least one of 1) the broad surface of the housing and, 2) collectively, distal portions of the array of permeable bodies define a concave surface that is complementary to the head region of the user during use of the system.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the array of openings is arranged in a rectangular array.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of each of the array of permeable bodies is situated within an opening of the array of openings of the housing.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein distal portions of the array of permeable bodies are exposed through the array of openings of the housing.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the headband positioning unit comprises a flexible structure contoured to a shape of the head region of the user, wherein the flexible structure is configured to move the array of permeable bodies through hair at the head region of the user upon flexing of the flexible structure during placement of the headband positioning unit at the head region of the user, and thereby to facilitate displacement of hair and promote electrical coupling between the array of permeable bodies and the head region of the user.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electromechanical coupler comprises a first portion coupled to the housing of the electrode assembly and a second portion coupled to the headband positioning unit.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the electrode assembly is configured with a first polarity and a second portion of the electrode assembly is configured with a second polarity during use by the user.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-absorbing material comprises at least one of a foam material, a hydrogel material, and a sponge material.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the fluid-absorbing material is an open cell foam.

12. A system for electrically stimulating a user, the system comprising:

an electrode assembly comprising:

a housing having an array of openings at a broad surface and providing an array of permeable bodies, wherein the array of permeable bodies is configured to conform to a head region of the user, each of the array of permeable bodies comprising:

a conductive polymer core associated with an opening of the array of openings;

a fluid-absorbing material at least partially surrounding the conductive polymer core, wherein the fluid-absorbing material absorbs a solution that facilitates electrical coupling between the system and the head region of the user;

a headband positioning unit configured to reversibly retain the electrode assembly; and

an electronics subsystem coupled to the headband positioning unit, the electronics subsystem providing current for stimulating to the user by way of the array of permeable bodies of the electrode assembly.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising an array of protrusions in communication with the array of permeable bodies, wherein the array of protrusions electrically connects the array of permeable bodies to the electromechanical coupler.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein distal portions of the array of permeable bodies are exposed through the array of openings of the housing.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein a first portion of the electrode assembly is configured with a first polarity and a second portion of the electrode assembly is configured with a second polarity by way of the conductive polymer of the array of permeable bodies.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the array of permeable bodies is arranged in a rectangular array.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the each of the array of protrusions tapers to a blunted end, and wherein the array of protrusions extends perpendicularly from the broad surface of the housing.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the array of protrusions includes a set of regions multiplexed to an electronics subsystem, wherein each region in the set of regions is configured to deliver stimulation independent of other regions in the set of regions.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the headset positioning unit comprises a flexible structure contoured to a shape of the head region of the user, wherein the flexible structure is configured to move the array of protrusions through hair at the head region of the user upon flexing of the flexible structure during placement of the headset positioning unit at the head region of the user to facilitate displacement of hair and promote electrical coupling between the array of permeable bodies and the head region of the user during use.

20. The system of claim 12 , further including an electromechanical coupler that couples the electrode assembly to the electronics subsystem.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the electromechanical coupler comprises a first portion coupled to the housing of the electrode assembly and a second portion coupled to the headband positioning unit.
