Abstract

This disclosure relates to methods and systems for delivering content such as enhanced television applications over a network. In one exemplary method, a request for a content item is received. The request is added to a request queue. Each application requested is then identified and then the exemplary method waits for the occurrence of a predetermined event. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined event, the exemplary method provides for sending a single instance of each content item, regardless of the number of requests for each such content item.

Claims (37)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a first request for a content item from a first device of a plurality of devices, wherein the first request comprises a resource locator;

receiving a second request for the content item from a second device of the plurality of devices;

adding the first request and the second request to a request queue;

determining an occurrence of a predetermined event, wherein the predetermined event comprises an increase in bandwidth; and

transmitting, based on the occurrence of the predetermined event, the content item to the plurality of devices through a single content transmission, wherein the content item is transmitted with a first identifier that matches the resource locator.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying, in response to the occurrence of the predetermined event, the content item based on the request queue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined event comprises an expiration of a timer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined event comprises exceeding a threshold number of requests in the request queue for the content item.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first request for the content item and the second request for the content item are made by an addressable converter.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating the first identifier with a single instance of the content item.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first identifier comprises an identifier of a content server comprising the request queue.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting, based on the occurrence of the predetermined event and the request queue, the content item to the plurality of devices through the single content transmission comprises transmitting the content item as a multicast transmission.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resource locator comprises a uniform resource locator identifying one or more the content item or a content server configured to process requests for the content item.

10. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a network device, a first request for a content item from a first device of a plurality of devices, wherein the first request comprises a resource locator;

receiving, by the network device, a second request for the content item from a second device of the plurality of devices;

transmitting the first request and the second request to a content device, wherein the content device is configured to insert the first request and the second request into a request queue;

receiving, by the network device, the content item based on the content device determining an occurrence of a predetermined event, wherein the predetermined event comprises an increase in bandwidth; and

transmitting, to at least the first device and the second device, the content item through a single content transmission, wherein the content item is transmitted with a first identifier that matches the resource locator.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting the first request and the second request to the content device comprises transmitting the first request and the second request separately to a hypertext transfer protocol adapter configured to map the network device to the content device based on one or more of the first request or the second request.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting, to at least the first device and the second device, the content item through the single content transmission comprises determining the first identifier based on a map correlating the first identifier to the content device and inserting the first identifier into at least a portion of the content item.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting, to at least the first device and the second device, the content item through the single content transmission comprises transmitting the content item as a multicast transmission.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined event comprises an expiration of a timer.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the predetermined event comprises exceeding a threshold number of requests in the request queue for the content item.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory storing processor executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:

receive a first request for a content item from a first device of a plurality of devices, wherein the first request comprises a resource locator,

receive a second request for the content item from a second device of the plurality of devices,

add the first request and the second request to a request queue,

determine an occurrence of a predetermined event, wherein the predetermined event comprises an increase in bandwidth, and

transmit, based on the occurrence of the predetermined event, the content item to the plurality of devices through a single content transmission, wherein the content item is transmitted with a first identifier that matches the resource locator.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the processor executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the apparatus to identify, in response to the occurrence of the predetermined event, the content item based on the request queue.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the predetermined event comprises an expiration of a timer.

19. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first identifier comprises an identifier of a content server comprising the request queue.

20. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the resource locator comprises a uniform resource locator identifying one or more of, the content item or a content server configured to process requests for the content item.
