Abstract

Systems and methods of transmitting heat out a medical imaging device are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a medical imaging device includes a housing having electronics and a heat sink. The heat sink is positioned near a first end of the housing, a groove that is configured to receive at least a portion of an operator's hand is positioned at a second end of the housing. A heat pipe in the housing extends from the electronics toward the first end of the housing and is configured to transfer heat produced by the electronics toward the heat sink and away from the groove.

Claims (26)

1. A handheld ultrasound system, comprising:

an enclosure comprising a base portion and a rear cover, wherein the enclosure has a first end opposite a second end, wherein the first end of the enclosure includes a groove configured to receive a portion of an operator's hand, wherein the second end includes a slot located at an edge of the rear cover and configured to allow air to pass therethrough;

a frame in the enclosure attached to the base portion;

a heat sink positioned at the second end of the enclosure adjacent the slot and attached to the frame via a thermally insulating pad to form a portion of the frame, wherein the shape of the heat sink conforms to a shape of the edge of the rear cover at the second end of the enclosure and at least a portion of the heat sink passively dissipates heat via the slot, and wherein the heat sink forms an outer edge of the frame;

electronics carried by the enclosure, wherein the electronics are configured to be communicatively coupled to one or more ultrasound transducer elements in a probe; and

a heat transfer member in the enclosure in thermal communication with at least a portion of the electronics, wherein the heat transfer member extends from the electronics toward the heat sink, and wherein the heat transfer member is configured to conduct heat from the electronics toward the slot via the heat sink and away from the groove in the enclosure and the rear cover.

2. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 wherein the heat transfer member includes a cavity configured to carry a working fluid.

3. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first temperature sensor at a first location in the enclosure; and

a second temperature sensor in the enclosure at a second location in the enclosure, wherein the first temperature sensor and the second temperature sensor are configured to produce first and second signals, respectively, corresponding to temperatures at the first and second locations.

4. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 3 , wherein the electronics are configured to receive the first and second signals, and wherein the electronics are configured to cease operating if first and second signals indicate a temperature gradient between the first and second locations in the enclosure greater than 5 degrees Celsius.

5. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 3 , wherein the second location in the enclosure is adjacent the heat sink and wherein the first location in the enclosure is closer to the groove than to the heat sink.

6. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the electronics comprise a first heat-producing component and a second heat-producing component, wherein the first and second heat-producing component are disposed between the groove and the heat sink, wherein the heat transfer member is a first heat transfer member extending from the first heat-producing component to the heat sink, and further comprising:

a second heat transfer member extending from the second heat-producing component to the heat sink.

7. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , further comprising: a heat spreader at least partially embedded in the rear cover of the enclosure.

8. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a band disposed along a perimeter of the enclosure, wherein the band comprises a different material than the enclosure.

9. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the slot is configured to prevent the operator's finger from touching the heat sink.

10. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the handheld ultrasound system lacks a fan.

11. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first temperature sensor at a first location in the enclosure; and

a second temperature sensor in the enclosure at a second location in the enclosure, wherein the first temperature sensor and the second temperature are configured to produce first and second signals, respectively, corresponding to temperatures at the first and second locations.

12. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 11 , wherein the electronics are configured to receive the first and second signals, and wherein the electronics are configured to cease operating if first and second signals indicate a temperature gradient between the first and second locations in the enclosure greater than a threshold gradient.

13. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 12 , wherein the threshold gradient is between 1 degree Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius.

14. The handheld ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the heat sink comprises one or more finned surfaces.

15. The handheld ultrasound system, wherein the heat transfer member is further configured to conduct heat away from a hand of the operator when the operator grips the handheld ultrasound system along the groove.
