Abstract

A compression stabilized prosthetic device for a patient having an amputated limb includes a first socket portion for contacting a patient's limb, and a second portion for the attachment of a prosthetic component. The first socket portion has compression portions configured for compressing portions of the patient's limb, and relief portions for receiving other portions of the patient's limb which bulge upon the compression applied by the compression portions. The relief portions may be formed as openings or as enlarged radius portions of the first socket portion.

Claims (26)

1. A method for motion capture of a bone contained within a limb such that motion between the bone of the limb and an inner surface of an interface is reduced, wherein the inner surface of the interface comprises a first rigid compression area, a second rigid compression area, and a third rigid compression area, which are separated by a first relief area, a second relief area, and a third relief area, respectively, the method comprising:

donning the interface over the limb so that the first rigid compression area, second rigid compression area, and third rigid compression area apply a first compressive force, a second compressive force, and a third compressive force to a first target area, a second target area, and a third target area of the limb, respectively;

wherein the first compressive force, the second compressive force, and the third compressive force cause underlying tissue portions within the limb to migrate to the first relief area, the second relief area, and the third relief area;

wherein the underlying tissue portions bulge outwardly and beyond their at rest positions into the first, second and third relief areas when the interface is donned; and

wherein the first, second, and third rigid compression areas are longitudinally-shaped and are oriented longitudinally along the limb; and

wherein the first, second, and third rigid compression areas are sized and dimensioned relative to the limb so as to reduce soft tissue volume between the first, second, and third rigid compression areas and the bone when the interface is donned.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inner surface of the interface further comprises a fourth rigid compression area, and wherein the first rigid compression area, the second rigid compression area, the third rigid compression area, and the fourth rigid compression area are separated by the first relief area, the second relief area, the third relief area, and a fourth relief area, respectively.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first, second, and third rigid compression areas are sized and dimensioned to compress the first, second, and third target areas inwardly when the interface is donned by at least 20% from the at rest position.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first, second and third compression areas reduce the first, second, and third target areas when the interface is donned by at least 20% from the at rest position.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interface has an encapsulating design.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interface has an open cage design.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first, second and third relief areas each comprises a opening.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising applying, prior to donning the interface over the limb, a flexible membrane to at least a portion of the limb, wherein the flexible membrane encapsulates the portion of the limb.

9. A method for using a prosthetic interface by a patient having a limb, wherein the prosthetic interface comprises a first portion for applying a compressive force to the limb, the first portion having a plurality of rigid compression portions and a plurality of relief portions, wherein the method comprises:

fitting the first portion of the prosthetic interface on the limb;

compressing portions of the limb using the plurality of rigid compression portions of the first portion of the prosthetic interface to thereby cause portions of soft tissue volume of the limb to flow outward at the plurality of relief portions of the first portion of the prosthetic interface so that the portions of soft tissue volume of the limb bulge outwardly from their at rest positions;

wherein the plurality of rigid compression portions is no less than three rigid compression portions and no more than four rigid compression portions and is disposed circumferentially around the limb during a time that the first portion of the prosthetic interface is disposed on the limb;

wherein each of the plurality of rigid compression portions has a longitudinal shape and is disposed longitudinally along a long axis of the limb during the time that the first portion of the prosthetic interface is disposed on the limb;

wherein each of the plurality of relief portions is disposed between two of the plurality of rigid compression portions and are sized and dimensioned to allow the portions of soft tissue volume of the limb to bulge outwardly beyond their at rest positions and into the plurality of relief portions in response to the compressing of the portions of the limb; and

wherein the plurality of rigid compression portions are sized and dimensioned relative to the limb so as to reduce soft tissue volume between the plurality of rigid compression portions and a bone of the limb when the interface is donned.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of rigid compression portions comprises four rigid compression portions, and wherein the plurality of rigid compression portions are sized and dimensioned to compress the soft tissue volume between the plurality of rigid compression portions and the bone of the limb of the limb inwardly when the interface is worn by at least 20% from their at rest position.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of rigid compression portions reduce the soft tissue volume between the plurality of rigid compression portions and the bone of the limb when the interface is worn by at least 20% from their at rest position.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the prosthetic interface has an encapsulating design.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the prosthetic interface has an open cage design.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of relief portions comprises a window.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising applying, prior to fitting the first portion of the prosthetic interface on the limb, a flexible membrane to the limb, wherein the flexible membrane encapsulates at least a portion of the limb.
