Abstract

An apparatus and method that intentionally illuminate a number of target devices with RF energy having specific characteristics (e.g., frequency, power, waveform, directionality, duration, etc.) are provided. The target devices, which may comprise a computer system or other electronic circuits, by their fundamental nature as mixed analog and digital devices, act as non-linear mixers and are forced to emit information about the target device behavior, state, and physical characteristics. The apparatus that implements the method receives the forced emissions signals, extracts useful data from noise, and analyzes the data to determine target device characteristics. The target devices may be powered or unpowered. The apparatus and method provided may avoid impacting target device operation.

Claims (27)

1. A software defined radio (SDR) apparatus configured to remotely analyze a target device, the apparatus comprising:

transmitter circuitry configured to illuminate the target device with electromagnetic energy at a carrier frequency that mixes with operational electromagnetic signals in the target device to produce forced non-linear emissions (FNLE) that radiate from the target device;

receiver circuitry configured to receive the FNLE from the target device, the FNLE including sidebands around the carrier frequency; and

processing circuitry to determine one or more operational electromagnetic signal characteristics or one or more physical characteristics of the target device based on the received FNLE.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine physical characteristics of the target device based on the received FNLE.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine whether a component exists based on calculations of third-order intermodulation products of the received FNLE.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine an authenticity of the target device based on the FNLE.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising processing circuitry configured to control the electromagnetic energy in terms of frequency, power, waveform, directionality, and duration.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising processing circuitry configured to control the electromagnetic energy frequency to avoid impacting target device operation.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising processing circuitry configured to adaptively modify the electromagnetic energy configuration in response to the analysis and evaluation, by sweeping the electromagnetic energy across a range of frequencies.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising processing circuitry configured to analyze the FNLE over a span of time and frequency.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the target device comprises at least one of a computer system, a communications system, an internet-connected device, an avionics system, a military system, and a business system.

10. A method of remotely analyzing a target device, the method comprising:

illuminating a target device using transmitter circuitry of a remote device that outputs configured electromagnetic energy at a carrier frequency that mixes with operational electromagnetic signals in the target device to produce forced non-linear emissions (FNLE) that radiate from the target device; and

receiving the FNLE from the target device using receiver circuitry of the remote device, the FNLE including sidebands around the carrier frequency; and

processing circuitry to determine one or more operational electromagnetic signal characteristics or one or more physical characteristics of the target device based on the received FNLE.

11. The method of claim 10 , determining physical characteristics of the target device based on the FNLE.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising calculating third-order intermodulation products of the FNLE to determine whether the component exists.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the evaluation further comprises comparing a reference evaluation of the target device with a subsequent evaluation of the target device to determine its authenticity.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is configured in terms of at least one of frequency, power, waveform, directionality, and duration.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium that stores instructions for execution by processing circuitry of a software defined radio (SDR) of a remote device, to configure the SDR to:

illuminate a target device using transmitter circuitry, of the remote device, that outputs configured electromagnetic energy at a carrier frequency that mixes with operational electromagnetic signals in the target device to produce forced non-linear emissions (FNLE) that radiate from the target device;

receive the FNLE from the target device using receiver circuitry of the remote device, the FNLE including sidebands around the carrier frequency; and

determine one or more operational electromagnetic signal characteristics or one or more physical characteristics of the target device based on the received FNLE.

16. The medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions to configure the electromagnetic energy in frequency to avoid impacting target device operation.

17. The medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions to adaptively modify the electromagnetic energy in response to the analysis and evaluation.

18. The medium of claim 15 , wherein the electromagnetic energy comprises radio frequency energy.
