Abstract

Some embodiments of the present invention provide fiberizable glass compositions formed from batch compositions comprising amounts of one or more glassy minerals, including perlite and/or pumice. Some embodiments of the present invention related to glass fibers formed from such batch compositions, and composites and other materials incorporating such glass fibers.

0-3 weight percent ZnO;

greater than 0 to 3 weight percent TiO 2 ;

8.5-18 weight percent alkali metal oxide (R 2 O) component;

a metal oxide (RO) component selected from the group consisting of MgO, CaO, BaO, SrO, and ZnO, wherein the first metal oxide component is present in an amount to provide a mass ratio of R 2 O/RO ranging from about 0.28 to about 1.7;

0-3 weight percent ZrO 2 ;

0-3 weight percent MnO 2 ;

0-3 weight percent La 2 O 3 ; and

greater than 0 to less than 1 weight percent of Fe 2 O 3 ,

wherein the glass fiber is resistant to acidic corrosion.

2. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the batch composition comprises at least 10 weight percent of a glassy mineral and at least 5 weight percent of a sodium source, wherein the glassy mineral comprises a combination of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 in an amount of at least 80 weight percent.

3. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber comprises MnO 2 in an amount up to 3 weight percent.

4. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the resistance to acidic corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sulfuric acid at a concentration of 1 normal is less than 4 weight percent after 12 hours.

5. The polymeric composite of claim 4 , wherein the solution is at a pH range of 0-1.

6. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the resistance to acidic corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sulfuric acid at a concentration of 1 normal is less than 3 weight percent after 12 hours.

7. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the resistance to acidic corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sulfuric acid at a concentration of 1 normal is 0.55 to 1.7 weight percent after 1 hour.

8. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the glass fiber further comprises resistance to alkaline corrosion.

9. The polymeric composite of claim 8 , wherein the resistance to alkaline corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sodium hydroxide at a concentration of 1 normal is less than 4 weight percent.

10. The polymeric composite of claim 8 , wherein the resistance to alkaline corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sodium hydroxide at a concentration of 1 normal is less than 3 weight percent.

11. The polymeric composite of claim 8 , wherein the resistance to acidic corrosion as determined by percent weight loss of the glass fiber in solution of sodium hydroxide at a concentration of 1 normal is 0.25 to 0.85 weight percent after 1 hour.

12. The polymeric composite of claim 8 , wherein the solution is at a pH range of 12-14.

13. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber has a length of less than about 105 millimeters.

14. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber has a length of less than about 13 millimeters.

15. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber has a length of greater than about fifty microns.

16. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber has a length of greater than about fifty millimeters.

17. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber is in the form of a non-woven fabric.

18. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the at least one glass fiber is in the form of a woven fabric.

19. The polymeric composite of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric material comprises a thermoplastic polymer or thermosetting polymer.

20. A polymeric composite comprising:

a polymeric material; and

at least one glass fiber in the polymeric material, the at least one glass fiber comprising a glass composition formed from a batch composition, wherein the glass fiber comprises:

53 to less than 62 weight percent SiO 2 ;
