Abstract

An electronic system including a mobile device that communicates with a reader device. In one embodiment, the mobile device may be configured as a mobile phone and the reader device may be configured as an electronic reader associated with an electronic lock. One or more devices in the system may determine the position of the mobile device in relation to the reader device, and cause an electronic lock or another type of access control device to perform a selected function based at least in part on the position of the mobile device in relation to the reader device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining an estimated arrival time of the mobile computing device to the reader device based on inertial characteristics of the mobile computing device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining an estimated arrival time of the mobile computing device to the reader device comprises determining an estimated arrival time of the mobile computing device to the predefined activation zone.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the location of the mobile computing device relative to the reader device comprises:

determining a location of the mobile computing device based on global positioning system data; and

comparing the location of the mobile computing device determined based on the global positioning system data to a location of the reader device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the location of the mobile computing device relative to the reader device comprises determining the location of the mobile computing device relative to the reader device based on a signal strength of a wireless communication signal received from the mobile computing device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein establishing the wireless communication connection with the mobile computing device comprises establishing a Bluetooth communication connection with the mobile computing device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating at least one of a software update or an audit between the reader device and the mobile computing device subsequent to establishing the wireless communication connection with the mobile computing device and prior to performing the automatic function.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reader device comprises an electronic lock.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile computing device is a smartphone.

10. A system, comprising:

a mobile computing device; and

an electronic lock having a wireless communication device for communication with the mobile computing device; and

wherein the electronic lock is configured to (i) establish a wireless communication connection with the mobile computing device in response to a determination that the mobile computing device is within a connection zone of the electronic lock, (ii) receive, from the mobile computing device, credential information indicative of access rights of the mobile computing device to an access-controlled region secured by the electronic lock, (iii) determine an automatic function to perform in response to verification of the credential information and a determination that the mobile computing device is within an activation zone of the electronic lock, and (iv) perform the determined automatic function;

wherein the mobile computing device comprises:

a global positioning system;

an inertial measurement unit;

a processor; and

a memory comprising a plurality of instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the processor, causes the mobile computing device to:

determine a location of the mobile computing device based on data generated by the global positioning system and at least one inertial characteristic of the mobile computing device based on data generated by the inertial measurement unit; and

determine whether to establish a wireless communication connection with the electronic lock via the wireless communication device based on the location of the mobile computing device and the at least one inertial characteristic of the mobile computing device.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the mobile computing device to:

determine whether the mobile computing device is within the connection zone of the electronic lock based on a comparison of the location of the mobile computing device with a location of the electronic lock; and

establish the wireless communication connection with the electronic lock in response to a determination that the mobile computing device is within the connection zone.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of instructions further cause the mobile computing device to transmit the credential information to the electronic lock.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one inertial characteristic is indicative of a gesture performed by a user of the mobile computing device; and

wherein the credential information comprises the at least one inertial characteristic.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one inertial characteristic of the mobile computing device comprises a speed and a direction of travel of the mobile computing device.

15. A system, comprising:

a mobile computing device; and

an electronic lock having a wireless communication device for communication with the mobile computing device; and

wherein the electronic lock is configured to (i) establish a wireless communication connection with the mobile computing device in response to a determination that the mobile computing device is within a connection zone of the electronic lock, (ii) receive, from the mobile computing device, credential information indicative of access rights of the mobile computing device to an access-controlled region secured by the electronic lock, (iii) determine an automatic function to perform in response to verification of the credential information and a determination that the mobile computing device is within an activation zone of the electronic lock, and (iv) perform the determined automatic function;

wherein the automatic function includes locking the electronic lock in response to a determination that the mobile computing device is located within a first activation zone defined by the access-controlled region; and

wherein the automatic function includes unlocking the electronic lock in response to a determination that the mobile computing device is located within a second activation zone defined by a predetermined range from the electronic lock outside the access-controlled region.

16. A system, comprising:

a mobile computing device; and

an electronic lock having a wireless communication device for communication with the mobile computing device; and
