Abstract

The composite material is comprised of a substrate of discrete particles and a network of interconnected mycelia cells bonding the discrete particles together. The composite material is a made by inoculating a substrate of discrete particles and a nutrient material with a preselected fungus. The fungus digests the nutrient material over a period of time sufficient to grow hyphae and to allow the hyphae to form a network of interconnected mycelia cells through and around the discrete particles thereby bonding the discrete particles together to form a self-supporting composite material. In another embodiment, the fungus is allowed to grow as a fruiting body out of the substrate and within an enclosure to completely fill the enclosure to form a self-supporting structure.

Claims (28)

1. A method of making a composite material comprising the steps

of

forming an inoculum including a preselected fungus;

forming a mixture of a substrate of discrete particles and a nutrient material, said nutrient material being capable of being digested by said fungi;

adding said inoculum to said mixture; and

allowing said fungus to digest said nutrient material in said mixture over a period sufficient to grow hyphae and to allow said hyphae to form a network of interconnected mycelia cells through and around all of said discrete particles thereby bonding all of said discrete particles together with said network to form a self-supporting composite material.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein at least one of said

inoculum and said mixture includes water and which further comprises the step of removing water from the formed self-supporting composite material to inhibit further growth of hyphae.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the nutrient material is at least one of a complex carbohydrate, polysaccharide chain, and a fatty group

capable of being used by a filamentous fungi as an energy source for growth.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said selected fungus is a filamentous fungi from any of the divisions of phylum fungi possessing a filamentous stage in a life-cycle thereof.

5. The method of making a composite material comprising the steps of

forming an inoculum including a preselected fungus;

forming a mixture of a substrate of discrete particles and a nutrient material, said nutrient material being capable of being digested by said fungi;

adding said inoculum to said mixture; and

allowing said fungus to digest said nutrient material in said mixture over a period sufficient to grow hyphae and to allow said hyphae to fully colonize said substrate and form a network of interconnected mycelia cells through and around all of said discrete particles thereby bonding all of said discrete particles together with said network to form a self-supporting composite material.

6. The method as set forth in claim 5 further comprising the steps of placing said mixture in a cavity of predetermined shape in a molding form defining a cavity with an open top prior to adding said inoculum to said mixture in said cavity and covering the form with a lid after adding said inoculum to prevent exposure of the inoculum to sunlight.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6 further comprising the step of allowing passage of carbon dioxide from within said cavity through a filter disk in said lid and allowing passage of oxygen through said filter disc from without said lid into said cavity.

8. The method as set forth in claim 7 further comprising the step of regulating the temperature within said cavity.

9. In a method of making a composite material, the steps of

forming an inoculum including, a preselected fungus;

forming a mixture of a substrate of non-nutrient discrete particles and a nutrient material, said nutrient material being capable of being digested by said fungi;

adding said inoculum to said mixture; and

allowing said fungus to digest said nutrient material in said mixture over a period sufficient to grow hyphae and to allow said hyphae to extend through said non-nutrient discrete particles while forming a network of interconnected mycelia cells through and around all of said non-nutrient discrete particles thereby bonding all of said non-nutrient discrete particles together with said network to form a self-supporting composite material.

10. The method as set forth in claim 9 further comprising the steps of

placing said mixture in a cavity of predetermined shape in a molding form defining a cavity with an open top prior to adding said inoculum to said mixture in said cavity; and

allowing passage of carbon dioxide from within said cavity out of said cavity.

11. The method as set forth in claim 10 further comprising the step of covering the form after adding said inoculum to prevent exposure of the inoculum to sunlight.
