Abstract

Compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into biotextile or medical textile substrates impart reinforcing strength, and stretch resistance and control into such substrates. Compliance control stitch patterns may be customizable to particular patients, substrate implantation sites, particular degenerative or diseased conditions, or desired time frames. Substrates having compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into them may be used in tissue repair or tissue reconstruction applications.

Claims (29)

1. An implant, comprising a substrate comprising a biotextile, or both a biotextile and medical textile, and one or more compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into the substrate, the implant configured as a hernia repair scaffold implant comprising:

a plurality of layers of the substrate, wherein the substrate comprises an extracellular matrix material, further wherein the plurality of layers are stitched together with a synthetic polymer in a first compliance control pattern comprising a biaxial pattern; and

one or more additional layers of the substrate stitched to the plurality of layers in a second compliance control pattern that is different from the first compliance control pattern.

2. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic polymer comprise monofilament threads or yarns comprising polyethylene.

3. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the synthetic polymer comprise threads or yarns comprising polypropylene.

4. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more compliance control stitch patterns comprise a plurality of lines comprising a plurality of repeating angles, said lines oriented along one or more axes of the substrate.

5. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is uniaxial.

6. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is biaxial.

7. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is oriented in a different direction than the first compliance control stitch pattern.

8. The implant according to claim 7 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is overlaid with the first compliance control stitch pattern.

9. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern is a higher density stitch pattern than the second compliance control stitch pattern.

10. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the compliance strain of the implant at 16 N/cm is between 10% and 30%.

11. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern comprises a grid pattern of straight lines.

12. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern comprises a grid pattern of straight lines.

13. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the extracellular matrix material comprises collagen.

14. The implant according to claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control pattern is overlaid with the first compliance control pattern at a diagonal.

15. An implant, comprising a substrate comprising a biotextile, or both a biotextile and medical textile, and one or more compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into the substrate, the implant configured as a hernia repair scaffold implant comprising:

a plurality of layers of the substrate, wherein the substrate comprises an extracellular matrix material, wherein the plurality of layers are stitched together with a synthetic polymer in a first compliance control pattern comprising a biaxial pattern; and

one or more additional layers of the substrate stitched to the plurality of layers in a second biaxial compliance control pattern, wherein the first compliance control pattern has a higher density stitch pattern than the first compliance control pattern,

wherein the peak compliance strain of the implant at 16 N/cm is between 10% and 30%.

16. The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the synthetic polymer comprise monofilament threads or yarns comprising polyethylene.

17. The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the synthetic polymer comprise threads or yarns comprising polypropylene.

18. The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the one or more compliance control stitch patterns comprise a plurality of lines comprising a plurality of repeating angles, said lines oriented along one or more axes of the substrate.

19. The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is oriented in a different direction than the first compliance control stitch pattern.

20. The implant according to claim 15 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is overlaid with the first compliance control stitch pattern.

21. An implant, comprising a substrate comprising a biotextile, or both a biotextile and medical textile, and one or more compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into the substrate, the implant configured as a hernia repair scaffold implant comprising:

a plurality of layers of the substrate, wherein the substrate comprises an extracellular matrix material, further wherein the plurality of layers are stitched together in a first compliance control pattern comprising a grid pattern; and

one or more additional layers of the substrate stitched to the plurality of layers in a second compliance control pattern overlaid onto the first compliance control pattern, wherein the second compliance control pattern comprises a grid pattern that at a diagonal relative to the first compliance control pattern,

wherein the peak compliance strain of the implant at 16 N/cm is between 10% and 30%.
