Abstract

A system for electrically stimulating a user comprising: a first housing portion defining an array of openings; an array of permeable bodies with portions exposed through the array of openings and wetted with a solution that facilitates electrical coupling between the system and a body region of the user, wherein each permeable body has a cavity at a proximal portion and a distal portion and is configured to transmit the solution to the body region of the user; a substrate region defining an array of protrusions configured to support the array of permeable bodies and composed of a conductive polymer; and a set of conductors in communication with the substrate region and including a first conductor that provides a first subset of the array of permeable bodies with a first polarity and a second conductor that provides a second subset of the array of permeable bodies with a second polarity.

wherein each of the array of permeable bodies has a cavity at a proximal portion and a tapered distal portion, is configured to transmit an electrolyte solution, through hair of the user, to the body region of the user during use and is composed of an olefin polymer that elastically deforms upon interfacing with the body region of the user;

a substrate region defining an array of protrusions corresponding to and configured to reside within cavities of the array of permeable bodies, the substrate region composed of a conductive material;

a set of conductors in communication with the substrate region, the set of conductors configured to couple to an electronics subsystem for transmission of current through the set of conductors and the array of permeable bodies for electrically stimulating the user during use of the system; and

a housing portion defining an array of openings at a broad surface, wherein distal portions of the array of permeable bodies are exposed through the array of openings of the housing portion.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second housing portion coupled to the housing portion, the housing portion and the second housing portion defining a volume within which the substrate region and the set of conductors are sealed, and wherein at least one of the housing portion and the second housing portion includes a ferromagnetic material region that interfaces the system with a magnet of an external headset that couples the system to the user.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein a base region of each opening of the array of openings of the housing portion is recessed at the broad surface, such that the base region of each opening defines a bowl about its corresponding opening.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the array of permeable bodies is impregnated with an electrolyte component and configured to be saturated with fluid, thereby generating the electrolyte solution from fluid combined with the electrolyte component, prior to use by the user.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an electromechanical coupler configured to couple the set of conductors to an electronics subsystem for transmission of current through the set of conductors and to the array of permeable bodies.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the electromechanical coupler includes an electronics substrate having a detection connector coupled through a resistor, having a characteristic value, to a stimulation connector, wherein the electronics substrate is configured to reversibly interface with a detection circuit, of the electronics subsystem, that provides a probe voltage to the stimulation connector, thereby producing a characteristic voltage at the detection connector that is determined by the detection circuit.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the characteristic voltage is indicative of a specific electrode unit of the system, and wherein electronics subsystem is configured generate an alert output upon detection that the characteristic voltage corresponds to an electrode unit system configuration unsuitable for use by the user.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the set of conductors includes a first conductor configured to provide a first subset of the array of permeable bodies with a first polarity and a second conductor configured to provide a second subset of the array of permeable bodies with a second polarity.
